The Bottom Line These are the ten I want saved in the event of the destruction of civilization.
The only way I could make this list was to decide which ten movies I simply could not do without. I do realize that, with one exception, none of these films come from the Golden Age of movies. But I am under 30, and I have seen very few older movies that impacted me like these have. In reverse order... 10. The Wizard of Oz: A feat of the imagination. Rarely, if ever, has the wonder and imagination of Oz been duplicated. 9. Platoon: No movie has captured the essence of Vietnam, or of war in general, as powerfully as Platoon. There have several excellent war movies, but none have been as moving as Platoon. 8. Quick Change: An unusual choice that few will agree with. The story, the actors, and the setting combined to create a certain comedic essence I have never forgotten. 7. Boyz N The Hood: An urban masterpiece. John Singleton did a brilliant job in depicting the struggles of black youth in America. 6. The Empire Strikes Back: The best of the three (no, four!) Star Wars movies. This is the darkest of the movies, and the most gripping. From the destruction of the rebel base on the ice planet, to the stunning revelation about Luke and Darth Vader, to Yoda's cryptic line, "There is another," to Han Solo's capture in the Cloud City, this movie serves as the crown jewel in the greatest science fiction story ever told. 5. Animal House: Although it's more than 20 years old, this story is timeless. Hysterical in its own right, it's like a time machine for anyone who wants to relive their days at the U. 4. Aliens: Sigourney Weaver's reprisal of her role as Lt. Ellen Ripley gave viewers the best sci-fi action flick of all time. The battle between human firepower and the alien killing machines made for a gripping story in this dark sequel. 3. Die Hard: Reinvented the action movie. Now fifteen years old, few movies have matched Die Hard in intensity, action, and deadpan humor. 2. The Shawshank Redemption: Brilliantly acted, this prison story delivers a memorable message of hope (and a little well-deserved revenge). 1. The Godfather: This story of an organized crime family is a brilliant, if not frightening look at the power of family and the pull of loyalty. |
