The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

  • User Rating: Disappointing
  • Local Coverage:
  • Plan Flexibility:
  • Customer Service:
Pros:Wide variety of available phones, Good Metro Area coverage, Nationwide Long Distance
Cons:Spotty customer service, SprintPCS reps at Edmond location are only there for a sale.
The Bottom Line: Until network expansion meets subscriber traffic, and customer service meets or exceeds customer expectations, SprintPCS should not sell one more unit in this area.

The Good:

When purchasing a mobile phone/plan I want the latest and greatest. I've used ATT Wireless (expensive/great nationwide coverage), Voicestream (promise of GSM/limited coverage), Southwestern Bell Wireless (regionally superior/inflexible plans), Cingular (SWBell with an attitude and advertising budget) and SprintPCS (too good to survive over subscription). SprintPCS once had the most well-rounded service and technology for the price if you lived in the OKC Metro. The service was great for the major metro-area US traveler also, as calls from the SprintPCS network were included no matter what city. A great selection of tech-savvy phones-coupled with affordable rates, flexible plans, and superior customer service-how could they go wrong?

The Bad:

'If you build it they will come'. They came, but SprintPCS didn't keep up with the amount of subscribers that flocked to the eye/ear candy of their superior clarity and cool phones. Soon, many areas of the OKC Metro that had once provided superior service began dropping calls left and right. The Hefner Parkway between 63rd and Memorial, most of South OKC, and Moore/Norman were areas that once afforded care-free, almost guaranteed 'quality service'. They quickly became saturated with more and more subscribers. Soon, even voicemail notification (a given) became seriously delayed to the point of uselessness. Any network, when overloaded and over subscribed becomes more of a hindrance than a convenience. Forget about 'mission critical' availablility, you were lucky to hear about it before the pink slip met you at your desk.

The Ugly:

Once, the rare dialing of *2 (customer service) was reserved for checking minutes left in plan, or checking statement balances. It was a pleasure to converse with 'Customer Care Advocates'-they truly loved helping a satisfied customer. Unfortunately, just when it was needed most, Sprint Customer service became a slug. In late 2000 thru early 2001 calls went into eternalhold, punctuated by annoying 'how-to use voicemail' messages. Representatives asked your SprintPCS number after you were asked to enter it as a requirement to reach them. Complaints of dropped calls were pooh-poohed as equipment problems. As both a home and office account holder, both phones suffered the same problem at my residence and at those of my associates who lived nearby or visited. 3 to 4 bars of signal strength-yet when a call connected 1 to 2 minutes in it would drop. This all in an area that for 2 years had superior service. After months of frustration, multiple trips to the SprintPCS store for equipment testing (always done in the back room BTW), and endless calls to customer 'dis'service, we switched to another provider.
