Even when shipping goes wrong ... Buy.com comes through!

It could have been a disaster. Usually I don’t write reviews about a store that has received so much Epinions feedback. However, when something goes so wrong ... it’s nice to report how Buy.com handled the situation. The ...

I had to Google them to find a phone number.

That's a sign that they don't have good customer service. They may have had it when the original review was written, but I didn't see it today.

Sleazy free shipping methodology (Reply to this comment)
by boostm3
"...Buy.com charges a flat shipping fee with an additional small charge for each item purchased.
If you are fortunate to qualify for free shipping, the order will ship via the Budget Shipping method. Should you need the order to arrive quicker, you can forfeit the free shipping to pay for quicker delivery..."

I find the way Buy.com handles their Free Shipping promises to be the sleaziest Ive ever seen online. I bought a gps navigator last night. This item has the 'Free Shipping' yellow truck icon prominently displayed for many of the items they list in this category.. When I selected the one I wanted to read its details, there as plain as day opposite the 'Shipping' label descriptor is the word 'FREE'. When i added the item to my cart and checked the order out, shipping had defaulted to the Bolded 'Standard'. I saw the shipping charge in my order, but just figured they would remove the charge when they processed the order. After all, the item had 'FREE SHIPPING' marked all over it.. Clearly they mark the item this way in the online catalog so that potential buyers will see the already low price, and then realize that with 'FREE SHIPPING' its Got to be the best deal in town! So, they plaster FREE SHIPPING all over the item at the product selection stage as a huge comeon, which it is. They dont make you go to another page to find a separate listing of those items which are eligible for FREE SHIPPING! That might confuse potential buyers, and certainly not be as convenient as showing the FREE SHIPPING icon right next to the item, so that buyers are certain to understand that this item gets FREE SHIPPING! But when it comes to actually buying the item, they obfuscate the process to actually receive this FREE SHIPPING. Its buried amidst a bunch of fine print on another page, where it makes reference to Budget Shipping. If you havent purchased so much from Buy.Com that you automatically remember how they deal with this shipping comeon, youll most likely simply accept their Standard Shipping selection which is the default, bolded choice on your order, and submit the order, expecting them to knock the shipping charge off when they process it. THEY DONT !!! Nowhere on the order page does it say anything about having to select the Budget Shipping choice in order to get that which they promise. They certainly leave no doubt, when you are at the product selection stage, that the item features FREE SHIPPING. But when it comes time to order it, they bury the truth amidst a bunch of fine print on another page entirely, that you have to navigate to on your own, and with the Default Shipping choice being made for you by the order form of the Bolded selection, and having read everywhere that it comes with FREE SHIPPING, unless youre very suspicious and skeptical at the time you actually submit your order, you will get taken just as I did. I even did go to the separate Shipping info page, and, yes, I saw mention of Budget Shipping. But Im telling you that, in the haste to place an order, there are 9 things telling you to just order it with the Default shipping method THEY select for you (remember, the item says FREE SHIPPING all over it), all nice and Bolded so you cant miss it, and 1 think telling you wait a sec; maybe you need to slow down, and reread the fine print ON THAT OTHER PAGE, and then make the connection that you cannot accept the default shipping method they select for you, but need to make another choice... Youve got to wander of the well beaten path in order to get your FREE SHIPPING. If you are duped into accepting the Default shipping method THEY select for you, youre going to pay shipping! Its a trap. If they really had any intention of honoring their free shipping commitment, they would default your order to the shipping choice which got you the FREE SHIPPING theyve been touting all along would accompany this product, and NOT the shipping method guaranteed to put shipping money into their pocket after deceiving you, their valued customer!

Again, Ive done a fair amount of online ordering, and, having a graduate degree level education, Im far from incompetent at reading and understanding directions. If I was caught by this web of marketing deceit and delusion, Ive got to believe that this is a big money maker for Buy.com, and some consumer group should really step in and force the issue.. Misleading, devious, and sleazy is the only way to describe this process. Again, all theyd have to do to make this an honest, above board process is, on the order submission page, instead of defaulting the shipping method to the choice which will force the customer to pay for what is supposed to be FREE SHIPPING, all bolded and appearing for all its worth like THE method the customer should accept for their product, and instead, simply default to that shipping method which will get the customer his FREE SHIPPING, which is probably one of the main reason she chose to buy the item from BUY.COM in the first place.

buy.com shipping and CS, uhm, sucks! (Reply to this comment)

I was shopping around for an Antec 900 computer case and came across buy.com's website offering $50.00 off your 1st order if you sign up for a revolution card. Seemed like a great offer. I placed an order on 03/20/08 and used a 5% off coupon. Later that evening I received an email stating the item shipped via FedEx Ground. WOW, that's service. Early the next morning I track the package and status shows on truck for delivery. Very exited I wake my wife up and tell her that FedEx will be coming today and to listen for the doorbell. I leave for work at 10:00am and get home about 6:00pm. No package yet. Track package online and status shows delivered on front porch at 9:09am. Nothing there when I left at 10:00am. Called FedEx and buy.com to trace package. 2 days later, FedEx driver confirms that he did leave the package on my porch. I live in a high foot traffic area and carriers usually leave a door tag if nobody answers the door. buy.com doesn't ship with the signature required option so it's at the drivers discretion to leave the package. buy.com says there is nothing they can do, the package was delivered and also, once it leaves buy.com liability has been transfered to the consumer. There is no option at checkout for the consumer to protect their investment, buy.com controls the shipping method and therefor should be held accountable for secure delivery. Saving .75 cents on shipping by not requiring a signature is absurd and not looking out for the customers best interest. The revolution card statement came and there was no $50.00 credit reflected. Customer service says promotion can't be combined with any other offers like the 5% off coupon that I used. Filed a complaint with BBB yesterday. Good times, buyer beware!

Great info by reviewer, but still poor service by Buy.com (Reply to this comment)

I wish to thank this reviewer for letting me know of Buy.com's phone number. I can't stress enough how useless their online webforms are. They provide no record in case something goes wrong.

While this review did not change my mind about Buy.com. It did allow me to get ahold of them and allowed both of us to try and avoid larger trouble. I was just about to have my Credit Card company disallow Buy's charges. Now I'll give them til Tuesday to get it worked out, before I resort to that.

don't you just hate that? I just don't get it - why should I HAVE to search for 30 minutes around a website just for some contact information? I hate that - thanks for pointing out this oh so important point :) Kimm
