If I had to pick a favorite cleaning product Im sure Comet would be at the top of the list; the gritty texture helps to break up surface dirt while the bleach works on the underlying grime. This makes it a great product for almost every room in the house garage, kitchen, bathroom
you get the picture. I started using this a few years ago when I was at Smart & Final and they had a six pack of it on sale. For under four dollars I got six cans of cleanser and I figured that even if this tweaked version of Comet wasnt all that great, I could still use it for the toilets to get rid of the nasties that breed in there. Its a cost effective product that can tackle jobs of all sizes which means you end up spending less since you dont have to invest in ten different cleaning products for different rooms in the house. Regular cleansers are great for the kitchen but when you need a little extra muscle, this is the one to reach for!
Comet Multiroom Disinfectant Cleanser With Bleach
The first thing that you need to know about this is the term disinfectant could be a little misleading to some people especially those who are looking for something to kill surface germs. From what I can see this isnt an EPA sanctioned product meaning that it will kill off most germs [like Staph and Salmonella] but it hasnt undergone testing needed to carry the official seal of a germ killing disinfectant. If you are dealing with a certain type of germ or have someone in your household that needs to be in a germ free environment its best to spend the extra money and go with an industrial product that is guaranteed to kill off the baddies providing that you follow the instructions for mixing and applying it. Comet Cleanser With Bleach will kill off most surface germs if applied and allowed to stand for at least five minutes. For toilets simply tap in a generous amount, use a bowl cleaner to remove surface dirt and to get under the rim them for extra cleaning and disinfection, allow it to sit in the bowl for five or ten minutes. I usually have to flush it twice to get rid of all the cleanser since we have low flow toilets but you may be able to get away with just one flush.
The only real drawback of the product is how it is packaged; the cardboard container is sturdy but once you open it theres no real way to reseal it. The small sticky backed piece of paper that covers the holes on the top of the can becomes caked with the powder so it doesnt stick to the can anymore. Sure you can put it into another container but you wont get the shaker-top action that the original can provides. This also means that if you set the can down too hard [or in my case slam it down on the counter] youll end up with a huge cloud of cleanser floating around the room something that Ive done on more than one occasion
and yes, that means inhaling it too. Not a good thing, not in the least. I solved this by putting one of the old elastic ended bowl covers on the top of it, if you have any of these laying around just put a huge X on it with a marker so it doesnt get used for anything else and make sure that every once in a while you dump out the residual powder that may build up on the inside pockets.
Cost
Most of the time you can find the fourteen ounce can for about a dollar a can but there are some places that insist on charging upwards of $1.99 a can something thats just outrageous. I usually buy this in bulk at Smart & Final, they sell the six pack of cans for about $5.00 so I can toss on in each of the bathrooms, in the garage and in the kitchen when they are starting to run low. There are some cases when I need to use a liquid cleanser, like for shower doors or the shower tiles but in most other cases I reach for the Comet cleanser. In my opinion this is one of the cheapest cleansers on the market [next to Ajax] but outside of the price, its the one that cleans the best and requires the least amount of elbow power to get the job done. As a side note you can also pick up the liquid spray version of this product for about $2.59 a bottle, great when you need to apply it to a vertical surface, tires or a large surface.
Things To Know
• If youve never used this before you may want to use it on a small area first as a test run. Ive never had any major problems when using this but there have been a few times when the cleanser marred surfaces. Dont use this on any type of plastic since the heavy grit of it will leave a haze on the surface of the plastic. Same goes for any type of stenciled or painted plastic since in most cases it will remove the image.
• Never mix this with any other chemicals and that includes using it in toilets that have an extended cleaner in it. Chances are these two compounds wont interact with each other but you never know. Try to use this in an open space or with plenty of ventilation, as I mentioned, when you place the can down with any type of force you will get a cloud of powder and if inhaled it will irritate your nose and throat. Since there is no way to close the container you should take extra care when storing it so that children can never come in contact with it, even if you cover the top of it, they can still get into it and ingest it or get it in their eyes.
The Bottom Line
If you have never tried this product but are looking for a moderately strong cleanser, I highly suggest that you give this a try. For the price it cleans a variety of surfaces and can be used in almost every room of the house. It can be damaging to sensitive skin so make sure you wear gloves if you are going to be using this for a long period of time and please read over the instructions and warnings on the side of the can before you use it.
As always, thanks for the read!
