PLEASE do not take migraines lightly!

May 03 '01

The Bottom Line Suffering from migraines on a regular basis is not normal and you should seek medical attention immediately.

I really couldn't find a "perfect" category for this topic so I decided to put it here in the hope that someone will not only read it, but also benefit from it.

I work for a very large company with a very small office staff. Until a few weeks ago our office consisted of seven people. Now it consists of six. I really hope that if you read this, and the situation in any way mirrors your situation that you will seek medical advice immediately.

Exactly three weeks ago this past Tuesday, my friend and co-worker, AJ, came in to the office to pick up her check. It was a beautiful day and it was payday which always brightens people's days. She told us all about how she was going to run to the store and buy some seeds to go home and plant in her garden. We told her to have fun and went on about our day.

Two hours later AJ was laying in the ICU having suffered a brain anurism. None of us could believe this had happened. After all, she was healthy as an ox aside from those migraines she had been getting for so long. Awww, those migraines!!!

What AJ went through for the next two weeks, no human should have to endure. Her third day in ICU she developed pneumonia, the fourth day she began leaking spinal fluid on to her brain and they had to put a shunt in to her head to take the pressure off her brain. By the end of the first week she had suffered a series of minor strokes and her liver was going in to failure. Her feet both dropped in to a ballerina position which meant that if she ever pulled out of this she would never walk again. That was not to happen as in the middle of week two she suffered a major stroke which left her brain dead. On day 14 her family allowed the doctor to declare her legally dead, and disconnect her from life support. At age 43 AJ was gone.

Now let me tell you about this woman, this life, that was taken entirely too soon. AJ was one of the most energetic people I ever knew. She was so full of life. She loved being outdoors puttering around in the yard, or camping in the mountains. She always came to work with a funny story to tell about her adventures around her property on her golf cart that had no breaks. She had a dog named Puggy who was like her child. She was the type of person who you never really understood but who you knew had a tremendous zest for life.

The point of this review is not to scare people to death or to down the medicine companies who put out over the counter medicines for migraines. There are many people out there who will develop a migraine every now and then simply because they are stressed out. Over the counter medicine is great for those people. My point is to let people know not to depend totally on over the counter medicines. AJ had complained about migraines for months but chalked it up to stress and took over the counter medicines for it. If she had only gone to the doctor's and gotten checked out she may still be here.

If you know someone who is complaining of migraines on a regular basis, urge them to see a doctor. Migraines are not normal. People do not get migraines regularly for no reason. With medical attention, maybe you or your loved one won't have to go through what AJ did.
