The origin of stout (Reply to this comment)
by wulfgar1976
Stout was *not* introduced by Guinness. It originated in London in the late 18th Century as a development of the popular porter style of beers. Although the Guinness brewery produced porters in the late eighteenth century, they didn't produce stout until the middle of the nineteenth century.
It should be noted that the texture of Guinness, along with the other mass produced Irish stouts, is artificially 'enhanced' by being injected with nitrogen. It's not a bad stout per se but there are much better examples available.

This is a nice primer on stout beers. I am a Guinness fan myself. There is also a little restaurant/brewery near where I live that makes a pretty good stout. I really like those dark roasted flavors.
Cheers,
Jon

Ahh how I love stouts! (Reply to this comment)

I agree that stouts are the ultimate beer style. Oddly enough at one time I hated beer. Not only that but I hated darker more flavorful beers with a passion. That all changed once I started working with beer. Having worked as a liquor salesmen for the last couple of years I have tried every style of almost every beer there is. When it comes down to it stouts are what I come back for again and again. While I admit it took me a few times buying guinness to get used to the taste I could now never go back. From Guinness, to Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, to Sam Adams's Cream Stout.... Stout is the greatest of all beer styles. It puts my second favorite pale ale's to shame. Three cheers for stouts!

The first time I ever had a Guinness was Saint Patrick's Day in San Diego.
My first thoughts where...what the He## is this awful bitter stuff.
Now...it's like Mother's Milk.
Most people think that Guinness is more fattening than regular beers. In fact is has no more calories than the regular fair.
Ever notice that the bubbles in a pint of Guinness flow DOWN? There is a lot science that explains that.
Guinness on tap is the ONLY REAL Guinness. Guinness in cans with the fancy patented gizmo is a distant, distant second. Guinness in bottles is only a bit better than any other Bubmilloors.

[In truth, I often enjoy a good oatmeal stout also.]
Nicely done.

3 Cheers for Stout! (Reply to this comment)

A few years back, I had the privilege of visiting Ireland with my dad. We hit St. James Gate just hours after the plane landed. Man, the brewery's on-tap Guinness was the best thing I've ever tasted!
Great job.
Cheers,
Michael
