I also read these reviews and bought this unit for about $800 after rebate. I also bought the DaLite Theater-Lite 80" portable screen. I can set up projector and screen in 2-3 minutes. When I am done I drop the screen and slide it behind the couch and throw the projector in the case.
My take: This is a very nice projector. Bright enough even in the daytime, movie theater bright at night. I do have a 2+ gain screen, which may help. The fan is not even a minor issue; it is quiet enough that it won't be a problem. Viewing angle on these setups is quite wide. Even sitting to the side while watching is no problem. Remote is light on functionality and design but no big deal.
I DO see the rainbow artifacts from time to time in the same settings noted by others. I am the visual purist guy that gets up at the theaters ('scuse me, 'scuse me) to go out and complain about the focus. I have about 40 hours watching on this unit and I would say rainbows range from totally unnoticed to an occasional distraction. My wife doesn't see the rainbows at all. Truth be told, the bright, sharp 80" throw so is so amazing for the price that nothing could convince me to take it back to the store.
