Pros: Just about everything!
Cons: Little loud at freeway speeds, but only if you're comparing it to a luxury sedan.
The Bottom Line: A great deal. The cost of ownership of a Civic makes this one a no-brainer.

There's nothing else that compares for the cost. I looked at every manufacturer that put out a less than $20k compact before settling on my Civic, and wow, did I make the right choice!
Acceleration is surprisingly good for a little 4-banger. You're not going to beat the neighbor's Mustang off the line, but hey, I'm getting too old for that anyways. Passing at highway speeds is extremely smooth and quick.
The ride is very comfortable. There's more interior space than you'd think; I'm 6'0" / 250lbs, and I have lots of room to spare in the driver's seat. The trunk is quite roomy for a car of this size as well.
Everything is well within reach of the driver; Honda continues its tradition of making things very simple yet effective. The controls are well laid-out and labeled, and there aren't so many as to overwhelm you with a myriad of blinking lights and buttons.
So far I've found the handling to be wonderful at all speeds. It's an extremely responsive car, and is actually fun to drive.
I ended up getting the LX version, where most things that you'd want on a car come standard. The EX adds alloys, a moonroof, and about 8hp. Eh. I didn't need it, so I didn't pay for it. I ended up getting most of the additional guards (door, fenderwell, splash), and the total cost of the car barely changed.
Two final words: HONDA RELIABILITY.
