| compaqted's Full Review: 2004 Ford F150 SuperCab 2WD |
Down on the farm, we need a vehicle that can work. If it doesn't work, we don't make any money. It is an essential.
Good thing about a truck is that is just a frame, an engine, a transmission, a rear axle, and a bed. Add in the cab, and you've got just about the whole thing. It is a simple vehicle.
I now drive an F-150 I bought new in 1991. It has 140K miles on it, and runs perfectly. It is used as a truck, not as an everyday, get the groceries type of vehicle. I pull livestock trailers and grain wagons, carry hay bales, feed sacks, etc.
But the '91 is getting tired, so I went to look at the new F-150. For almost triple what I paid in 1991 for a SuperCab (unbelievably a new XLT SuperCab is about $31000), I get basically the same truck. The interior looks slick, but you can't get it with a manual transmission anymore.
However, the ride is absolutely amazing. It is compliant, and quiet. You can drive 40 miles to town and not even mind.
The key thing, in my mind, is that Ford didn't forget that some people (like me) still use their trucks to do real work. The frame is stiff and strong. The truck goes into the field easily, and handles ruts with no problem. The engine and tranny are strong and smooth, and it can pull a heavy trailer out of a field without a groan or creak.
But the biggest improvement, in my opinion, is the brakes. They are steady and strong, a *huge* improvement over the brakes on the previous F-150, which I thought were weak.
Good job Ford!
