COMPAQ "THEY DON'T BACK UP THEIR PRODUCT"

The Bottom Line The bottom line is I think when you buy a Compaq, you spend ALOT of money for a HUGE HEADACHE.TECH SUPPORT IS TERRIBLE!!!

I was a new computer user at the time.My wife and I went out to Best Buy to purchase a new computer of our own.The salesmen recommended the Compaq 5003us.This computer had 128ram(which we later upgraded to 384ram),a 60gb hard drive,a cd-rw drive,it's sound and graphics cards were integrated on the mother board, which shared the memory.I found out later it's not as good, and harder to upgrade when the memory is shared, and the graphics and sound cards are on the mother board. We paid 1,100 dollars for just the computer, keyboard, and mouse.

From day one we had nothing but problems with this computer, from freezing up constantly,to constant errors.I would call tech support, and wait on hold for up to an hour at a time, sometimes getting disconnected and having to wait all over again.Nobody could give me the correct advice to fix the problems. Most of the time they would have me do a restore disk, which would erase everything I had done.I think I had a defective computer, but you can't tell Compaq that.I put up with these problems and calling tech support for 3 1/2 months.I must have spent hundreds of hours trying to fix the problems, and being on the phone with tech support.

I couldn't take it anymore so I sold the computer to a computer store which sells new and used.I took a 750 dollar loss on it.(that includes $200 I spent on the two year extended warranty policy from Best Buy)You might ask why I didn't sell it?well it's because I couldn't sell a problem to somebody else and have them go thru all the problems I had to go thru. All I wanted tech support to do was either exchange the computer, or take it and test it for themselves, which of course they wouldn't do either.

Since then I did alot of research and ended up buying a Dell dimension 8100 series computer.(see my review on the Dell, also in epinions)Even though I lost alot of money, this was the best thing I could have done.I no longer have any problems(major),but when I do have a question,Dells support staff is eager to help, and they don't act like I'm a burden. The longest I've been on hold with Dell is about ten minutes.

What you also might want to know about Compaq is that Windows ME is installed on the hard drive with all of Compaqs programs,so you can't just reload windows you have to restore everything, which means you just lost all that hard work you have done.

The training for Compaq's tech support must be terrible, because every one of their employees gives you a different answer to the same questions.Obviously everybody would most likely have a slightly different answer, but these are COMPLETELY different. One person even had my wife do a quick restore disk set to the wrong computer specs.(a different model computer)She had even asked why we were using a different model, which he replied "they have the same exact options in them".Well sorry to say they didn't and the sound no longer worked, and the picture on my monitor was offset,so we had to call again and do it over, this time it was right.I hoped we didn't wreck anything. That was just another example of what you probably would have to deal with if you bought a compaq, and had to call tech. support.

I thought I was maybe a rare case, but when I talked to people, they themselves had been thru the same thing,or new of somebody who had been also.

Well I hope you can use this to make an educated decision on what new computer purchase you might have.
