| megsfolks's Full Review: Motorola Simplefi Home Audio Receiver |
These days, you can find the Simplefi for a fraction of the cost it was originally offered at. I picked up a brand new unit on eBay for a song. My guess is that the complexity of the setup is what has driven many of these units to be sold on eBay--likely what also caused Motorola to stop selling the product.
I consider myself technically competent. But, even so, I couldn't get this thing to work in my fairly simple system (Digital Cable, DLink Wireless Router). The IP setup is not intuitive. I had to spend 50 minutes with Motorola customer service to get the setup working. A credit to Motorola--the customer service was of top notch quality.
Yes, the setup was a pain. But, it was worth it. I love being able to stream mp3s to my stereo system while I'm working on the computer. Previously, I would just run the sound through my very nice Altec Lansing computer speakers. I had not realized how much sound quality I was giving up. I am so much happier pumping Dire Straits through my Klipschs!
What is the value of this unit? Handling the device and the unit; it seems that this is about $150 worth of electronics. The package is surprisingly small. The user interface is reasonably intuitive and very easy to learn, albeit somewhat strange and unique in that the remote control mounts into the unit and serves as the faceplate controls as well. The $350 original list seems quite high. If you can get this thing for $100 or less, you will not be disappointed.
