NPR on the WMLS11B Linksys Wireless System (Reply to this comment)
by silverstreak9
NPR itself streams audio in Windows Media and Real Audio formats. The Linksys WMLS11B will NOT receive those. It only receives mp3 streams, as noted in the review.

So can you get NPR? You bet. WNYC (http://www.wnyc.com) is one of dozens and dozens of public broadcasting outlets that stream NPR programming in the mp3 format. WNYC and many of the others are also on the Linksys list of available stations.

So can I listen non-stop to NPR programming? I can't answer that...you might have to do some "station surfing" to keep it up 24 hours a day. The most popular programs, like "All Things Considered" are readily available on program schedules and you can fine them quite easily.

I'm a bit puzzled that some of the reviews here say the WMLS11B isn't receiving mp3 streams or playing mp3 files. That is not AT ALL my experience with this product. It seems to play any mp3 source and all of my thousands of mp3 recordings.

The actual list of stations on the WMLS11B are updated automatically. They change. Some are always there (like WNYC) but others seem to come and go. So the direct answer to your question is NO, there isn't a master list anywhere except on the player itself.

Hope that helps!

List of iRadio stations on Linksys system? (Reply to this comment)

Although it's comforting that there are hundreds of internet radio channels to choose from - in particular I'm looking for one - NPR.

Does anyone have a complete list so I can see if NPR is available?

Well, the good news is that Linksys has fixed the firmware bug that prevented playing more than 10 songs on a playlist.

Still, this unit is seriously limited by the poor quality of the LCD screen.

Slim Devices Squeezebox costs about twice as much, but it you really want to see your music files from across the room, it's the clear choice right now.

Very good review. Here are some few additions (Reply to this comment)

I really like your review and I hope to find more reviews from you in future.

I bought this unit 14 days ago and I'm found some problems that you didn't mention. If the mp3 files have tags with non-ascii chracters (like é, ç, ñ, ã) the unit won't play these files. As my library is made of mainly foreign songs, in Portuguese, Spanish, French, the chances for non-ascii chars in the tags are high. It might even freeze to a point that you cannot turn it off by pressing the button or the power button on the remote. You have to disconnect from the outlet to restart the unit.
I'm seriously considering returning the unit , but I'll give it a try on the Linux software that you suggested to stream my library before returning it.
Thanks

Thanks for the kind words. I like writing about things I fully understand, actually use and can offer some detail about. But I'll try to include more of them!

I don't know if the "Appendix" added to some of these reviews really works...if anyone has a comment about adding links, suggestions etc., screed us a line here! ;-)
