LessThanNick1's Full Review: It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back by P...
Public Enemy is my favorite rap group. In my opinion they are the greatest rap group of all time. I know this can be argued but it’s just my opinion. It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is probably their best album. Fear of A Black Planet is also very good but I think It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is their best work.
a revolutionary hip hop album
It Takes A Nation Of Millions came out in 1988. This was during a time when hip-hop was considered to be party music. Run DMC dropped their squekey clean party rhymes. Public Enemy is far from just party music. Chuck D is the lead emcee of PE. He spits socially conscious rhymes about black oppression and other political topics. Chuck D is a very talented emcee his rhymes are great. Flava Flav is the wild card of PE. He’s kinda crazy a adds his input to the album. Flava Flav peppers the album wit his trade mark “yeaaahs” He really shows that he can flow of the song “Cold Lampin With Flava” He takes that track on by himself. Terminator X is PE’s DJ. He’s very talented. He’s beats are inventive but not too flashy. This isn’t Cash Money, you don’t want a really flashy beat to distract people from Chuck D’s rhymes. Professor Griff also adds a little to this album. He would later get kicked out of PE because of some anti-Semite comments he made.
lyrics make this record great
A tight beat can only carry a hip-hop album so far. For me it’s the lyrics that make or break an album. Chuck D’s lyrics are just so great. He’s not quite as anti-white as Dead Prez. He’s more anti-establishment. PE is very refreshing in a world where most rappers just rap about their money, hoes, cars, drugs, and fake gang sh*t. Many different social issues are brought up in PE’s songs.

Stand-Out Tracks
“Bring The Noise” – The version of this song with Anthrax is better known. This is the rap version of the song. It doesn’t have guitars or anything, just a solid beat. Chuck D just lets loose and flows very well. I think most people know the words to this song.
“Terminator X to the Edge of Panic” – Terminator X does a great job with samples of the group to create this song. He’s a very talented DJ and shows us just how great he is. Throughout the song Terminator X loops in little political quotes. This song appears on many people top hip-hop songs lists. I’ve seen a few times on epinions essays about top hip-hop songs.
“Night of the Living Baseheads” – This song is a classic. The video for this song is great. I love the quote at the beginning of the song: Have you forgotten that once we were brought here we we’re robbed of our name, robbed of our language, we lost our religion, our culture, our god, and many of us, by the way we act, we lost our minds

Nick’s Final Thought
This album is a piece of hip-hop history. Although it wasn’t PE’s first album, it was the album that brought them into the mainstream. This album is quite possibly the best hip-hop album of all time. I’m not sure if I should go that far. It’s a classic album that anyone should own. Go out and buy this album and add it to your collection. You won’t regret it.
