If you are looking for that fun little sports car that makes you feel like throwing all caution to the wind and pretending like you're a teenager again, then this is the car for you! I purchased the 6-speed manual transmission model with the Grand Touring Package and haven't had any second thoughts or regrets. The 1.3L Renesis Rotary Engine delivers 238 hp and produces that wonderful sports car sound and feel. This small but remarkable engine is built to rev up to 8500 rpms before a chime sound is heard indicating you must shift up to the next highest gear. Imagine climbing to 60 mph in 2nd gear!!! It's possible in this car. The only thing I've noticed is that the torque doesn't really kick in until you've hit 5,000 rpms or above. To be honest, it's not the quickest car off the starting block, but surges with power once you get into the high range of 2nd gear and beyond. The clutch has a tight feel and takes a bit of getting used to. Braking is superb as well as cornering and overall handling. Take it out on a winding mountain road and you'll maneuver right through the tightest curves. The ride is very comfortable, but with it's low profile there is a little more road noise than I originally expected. Also, I have noticed the CD player can skip over small bumps or potholes.
Even though the 6-speed manual transmission is pricier than the automatic I think it is well worth it to pay the extra $600-800. I have not driven the automatic but understand it has considerably less hp than the 6MT.
If you purchase the manual version then it is a must to purchase the Grand Touring Package. It includes Leather Seats, Xenon Headlamps, Moonroof with Sunshade Slider, 8-way power adjustable driver's seat, upgraded Bose Stereo System, heated front seats, and Dynamic Stability Control, to name a few. It does carry an extra price tag of $2,500-3,500.
Well, I've made this car sound too good to be true, right? Well, here it comes. My only complaint is the lack of leg, shoulder, and particularly head room! Remember that the moonroof takes a few inches away from total headroom. After all this a sports sedan and not a luxury car. If you are above average height you will have to maneuver very carefully when getting into the car so as not to bump your head. Getting out takes some getting used to also because of it's very low profile. Also if you plan to take rear passengers just make sure they are under 5'10" or they will be brushing the roof with their heads. Also, leg room is at a real premium in the rear seats! I am convinced that only small to medium-sized children can fit comfortably in the rear seats. Don't ever ask your 6'4" buddy to get in the back. It's just not gonna work (at least comfortably)!
The control panel is very modern and makes you feel like you're in the cockpit. Seats are very comfortable but not exceptionally wide. You can draw your own conclusions from that one. You can choose from some great colors and color coordinated interiors. Trunk space is adequate. There is quite a bit of room for luggage, golf clubs, etc. Gas mileage is not terrific (EPA 18 City/24 Hwy) and the engine does consume quite a bit of oil as others have mentioned. All in all, it is an ingeniously designed sports car without the high price tag!
