VHS & DVD: MY TOP TEN

May 07 '01

The Bottom Line Toy Story 2, Ghostbusters, The Matrix... they get better and better!

I have a minimal collection of DVD’s but over a 100 VHS tapes, along with one or two Betamax tapes too, yes I still have my trusty Sony Betamax player handed down to me from my parents. Anyway, I have been staying up real late and watching some movies, and taking notes too. So here are my ten favourite movies.

10). Toy Story 2

I feel almost embarrassed to have this here, now that I am 16 an all. The first time I saw it in the cinema was truly excellent. I haven’t been big on sequels but this has enough action and pure comedy which makes it superb. The voices can become tedious the second time round, but the first viewing was enough for me.

9). Ghostbusters

This was another film I managed to watch. I wasn’t actually looking forward to the viewing, but once it began, I just couldn’t stop laughing. The comedy inside was brilliant. So subtle I had never noticed before. While the acting and action sequences aren’t brilliant, the origional story and comedy earns it a right in this list.

8). The Matrix

It might not have a pure story, but what the action sequences achieve is impossible to describe. Listening in the dark with my stereo pumping out full volume, and a bowl of pop corn in my lap, the extremely smooth action sequences and sound effects are what keep me enthralled. It’s not the special effects, but the blasting out sound which keeps me on the edge.

7). Terminator

What an old film, it really got me when I watched it again, the performances are super. The acting and action blend well, and the bad vs. good cliché comes in here too. You can sense the chase, making it exciting, and is backed up by a nice sci fi story.

6). Braveheart

Well this film turned my stomach, only because the final images are so real, you can imagine what’s happening, I’ve learnt about what happens, ‘hung drawn and quartered’ I believe its called. A true classic film. Even Mel puts in a true life emotional presentation of a Scottish man. The film looks great and feels great. It’s a great film.

5). Star Wars; Episode 1; Phantom Menace

Oh I can remember seeing this in my local cinema. The story, action, and speed was totally exciting. The film may be old but the story beneath is good, but what hit me best was the speed; those races are what got me most. The sheer adrenalin from the speed and special effects make it a superb late night film. I admit the characters are poor but the action sequences make it a star.

4). True Lies

I love my Arnie flicks, and this has to be one of Arnold’s best. The action sequences alone give the film a superior feeling over others, the camera work and acting are all seamless. It seems like all following films just follow in the same FBI, CIA, or whatever style. But this just makes them a pathetic cousin. It has the best of what I like, good story, and good opening and ending sequences. Plus a little comedy too.

3). Saving Private Ryan

Ah, finally a DVD gets in the list. But what this film captures is the presence of war onto the soldiers. Some fight and never give up, some cry and call out for mummy, which make you feel like asking yourself, “what would I do”. The acting and action blend without fail. It makes you appreciate the efforts of young people who possibly saved our civilisation. Best WWII film.

2). Alien

I, like so many other men, are a bit off women heroes, but here Ripley, Sigourney Weaver shines. The acting performance, backed up by s sturdy plot give it a true Sci Fi feel. All others just can’t match this film. Some may argue the second is slightly better, but the way the frightened Ripley turns around into a hero is sensational.

1). The Green Mile

This has to be one of the most horrific films I have ever seen. There’s a sheer terror in the way it is shown, the horrifying atmosphere and not to mention the emotion of ‘Death Row’ are totally brought to life in this epic drama. The acting performances are brilliant, you can really feel the emotion, the fear, the anger, the tension. This earns it place as the best film I have ever seen.
