The Bottom Line Don't force, Closed Caption, Lie, Do WHATEVER IT TAKES!

It never really hit me that kids who read a lot when they were little become so much more sucessful than the kids who don't read. Unfortunatly, used to not have a strong intrest in books. I wish I used to though.

It's not something you can just wake up to one day and say "I'm going to read a book today." For me, it seriously used to take so much energy. I rent so many books from the library that I don't read. I can read, if I really wanted to, I can read a 200 page book in 3 days. It's just the act of understanding.

When I was little, I was forced to read. If someone has to force you in doing something, it's not something they can force you to enjoy. Obviously, since it was something I didn't enjoy, I wasn't going to get all excited about it when my mother would make "Reading Hour." What little 7 year old kid would rather read than go outside and play soccer with their friends? Well that's all I wanted to do. Even soccer books didn't spark my intrest! So getting them to read something they may enjoy can not always me the solution.

Believe it or not, reading out loud is so effective. When I was in the forth grade, I was diagnosed with a Learning Disability. If I had to read something alone in class, it wouldn't come easy for me. I could read it in the same speed, but understanding it could take a few minutes, rather than a few seconds. If you could take the time for each night to say, read a bed time story to your child, while showing them the words and letting them read along with you, their views on reading could change dramaticlly.

People think that Television can ruin a childs intrest for reading, think again. There are some great Television shows out there perfectly fit for eduacation and learning how to read. Infact a great show is... "Learn How To Read." When I was sick one day, and there was nothing better to do, I watched that show. No, it isn't the most exciting show, in fact it is so far away from exciting, but it certainly is very effective. I even learned some tricks that was never taught to me, that could have made my reading experience easier!

Take your child to reading sessions at the library. My mom used to do that for me, and I had so much fun. I met new friends and the Librarians would read funny books to us. If they don't have it at your local library, then your school may have a program for that.

Jump start your Kid! I ran a test for a science project that if Closed Captioning for a Kid would be effective. I took my 5 year old cousin and watched Seasame Street with him everyday for 3 months. While he watched it, I put the Closed Caption on. As the words were going by on the screen, I think he really understood what was going on. After 3 months of having the Caption on, his reading level went up.

You can of course always tell your child that if they don't learn to appreciate reading, they'll be left back and won't continue on the next grade level. Lying is bad, but I sure wish someone would have told me that!( I didn't get left back, but I certainly would have taken that very seriously)
