Costco knew what they were doing... (Reply to this comment)
by mdgabrie
...and appropriately refused to put lower-speed rated tires on your car. You admit to not knowing much about the topic - you really need to understand that the tires are an integral part of your suspension system, and by changing the type (composition, speed rating, etc.) you're messing with something that is a crucial factor of your car's handling. Replacing one V-rated tire with another is OK; changing it out for a P-rated tire is going WAY out on a limb. There's a big enough break between V- and H-ratings that I'd be very hesitant to switch down even one bracket, in that case.
But you'll get your 65K miles on those new tires. If you live that long. You bought a "performance" vehicle - those cost more. Don't try to own one on the cheap. Stick to your Geo Metro.

"Advisors help shoppers find the best content on Epinions by accurately rating (according to Epinions Rating Guidelines) and sorting reviews in their category. In addition, Advisors provide constructive feedback to reviewers on how to improve content quality."
So I guess Mark never read the "Epinions Rating Guidelines" because that did"nt sound very constructive.
Maybe Mark belongs in the kitchen with Sue because neither of those 2 have any clue about how this very large industry operates. In this day and age of Government Regulations and Corruption (what's the difference)"We the People" have a Government "Of the People by The People" to protect the public from itself. This means that our government does'nt have faith that we can make decisions on our own without them to guide us and after your comments I see why they believe that.If either of you (or anyone else for that matter) would have checked, before or even after the inquiry, the numerous websites that give a plethera of information about purchasing tires, you would have seen on most to every one of those websites the statement that says to "replace tires with the same speed/load index as the original tire".What we have to remember here is that your dealing with people and people are "Retarded". Gather your facts first before inquiring with your local dealer that way when something doesnt sound right, you won't be guessing, you'll know it.

Costco's will not sell you a lesser rated tire... (Reply to this comment)
by TekDemon
But it should still sell you a different tire. I called them up today to get new tires for my 2003 Camry and was told that my car requires H-rated tires and that the tires I was inquiring about were only S-rated. After doing a lot more research online, I came to the conclusion that what Costco's had told me was for the best and that my car does in fact require H rated tires to work properly.
Perhaps there was a misunderstanding that lead you to believe that they wouldn't sell you anything except the original factory tire? They can't sell you anything with ratings lower than the factory tire but there should still be alternative tires that meet or exceed those ratings, although they won't be cheap =(

Re: Costco Policy (Reply to this comment)
by sbbigdon
I took my 97 V6 Camry in for new tires and asked for a T rating tire. They said I must buy an H rating. I looked on the decal inside my door and it listed an H. The thing I don't understand is why my new Camry V6 came with T rating tires, Just the 205/65 15R on it's door decal with no rating as far as speed. When I asked the tire clerk to llok up a 2006 Camry V6 on his computer it came up with another H rating. So why does Toyota put a tire on my new car that Costco says is unsafe? Is Costco's policy misinformed or does Toyota not know what they're doing?

Costco Policy (Reply to this comment)
by htnelson
Just ran into that myself but with a twist. I have a 1989 Mustang 5.0. Car came with H rated tires. I don't know if V rated tires were sold in US in 1989. Last time I got Costco tires they put an H rated tire on the car (California Highway patrol used H rated tires on their pursuit 5.0 mustangs in the early 90's). Went in to check on replacement tires and they told me their computer would only let them put V rated tires on the car. Now I know this relatively unsophisticated suspension was not designed for V rated tires. I suspect it is the corporate lawyers setting this policy. It is their choice and I will have to get tires elsewhere. But I will also get tires for our Windstar van two volvo wagons elsewhere also.

Sweetsue doesn't have a clue. (Reply to this comment)

It is apparent to me that you don't have a clue about tire knowledge. It is apparent after reading this nonsense that you shouldn't be giving anyone advice about purchasing new tires or advice on anything for that matter.
Costco was in fact doing the right thing buying trying to sell you the appropriate tire for the car. Although you are not driving 149 mph the engineer that designed you car put that performance tire on there for a reason. The tire is like a part of the car's suspension system. The sidewall of performance tire is much stiffer than a non-performance tire. Also the rubber compound of a performance tire is much softer than a non-performance tire which allows it to heat up faster, enabling it stick to ground, giving the car its proper performance and handling. Putting a lower speed rated tire on the car would cause the car to handle like "mush" in certain emergency situations whic may lead to an accident. These type of tires are not designed to last 80,000 miles because of the rubber compound. I'll bet that you didn't get good mileage out of the tires because they probably never were rotated and the front-end is out of alignment. The guys at Costco were actually doing the right thing, but you knew more than they did because you are obviously a tire specialist. Get a clue and become educated about a subject before you attempt to advise people on a topic you obviously know nothing about.

You're Missing Something Important! (Reply to this comment)
by wendellj
A v-rated tire is theoretically "safe" up to 147 mph or so, but, more importantly, a V tire works best with the dynamics of the suspension on those cars.
V-Rated ties cost more. Trust me, if Honda could get by putting a low-speed, and MUCH CHEAPER, tire on their cars, they WOULD do it.
There have been successful lawsuits against tire dealers who put a different rated tire on a car than the one recommended by the car manufacturer. One suit involved a Porche that crashed. Experts found that the wrong rated tire had been installed on the car -- a fact that probably contributed to the lack of control of the vehicle in a turn -- and ultimately contributed to the crash.
Tire dealers are well aware of the potential liability and most reputable ones won't install the wrong tire on a vehicle. Hope this helps.

Did they put them on your car! (Reply to this comment)

They will sell you the tires, but will not install them. So what is the point in buying from Costco?

Costco let me buy different tires (manufacturer and size)! (Reply to this comment)

I was surprised to read "they (Costco) told us that they had to sell us the same tire that was put on at the factory" for they sold me different tires (both manufacturer and size).

Talk about a fast one
I don't have the same size or brand that came with my F150
Like a Honda is even capable of 147MPH, LOL
A Mustang Cobra which is one of the fastest productuion cars sold in this country has over 300HP and "only" goes 150MPH

Sounds like Price-Costco are IDIOTS (Reply to this comment)
by mrkstvns
I can't believe any retailer would be so stupid as to implement a company policy against selling any tire other than the manufacturers original.
VERY consumer hostile! If they ever pulled a stupid stunt on me like that, it would be the LAST time they ever got a shot at my business.
Thanks for the heads up...I'll sure watch out for those guys!
