Tampons, Bikinis, and Bears Oh My!

The Bottom Line Make sure you talk with your daughter to see what her needs and wants are for her camping experience.

Camps have been my thing for every summer since I was around 13. As both a camper, counselor, as a director, and a lifeguard. In less than a month, I'm off to my 6th summer as a staff member at a Girl Scout camp, and I thought I'd share some preparation tips with you, some that you might have overlooked.

Every year, there is at least one young teenage girl that gets her period for the very first time at camp. Luckily, most of these girls have had a sit down talk with their Moms (or maybe their Dads) and are mentally prepared for it. If your youngster is around that age, it might not hurt to have a lil chat before you send her off to sleep away camp for the summer. Now, its not necessary to pack along every type of hygiene product on the market, the camp can provide those. But keep your child in mind....will she be too embarrassed to ask for them?

If there is some sort of swimming facility at the camp, make sure your girl has a 'swimmable' bathing suit. Not the string bikini that your 15 year old hides from you and wears to the beach, and not one that is about 4 summers old and really doesn't fit your 10 year old all too well but its good enough for the backyard pool. Your girl will most likely be swimming, canoeing, sailing, surfing, and have water balloon fights in this suit, so make sure its fits and is appropriate.

My last bit of advice involves friends at camp. Camp can be seen in two lights. One, as a way for your girl to meet new, more diverse people that they would have not have met going to school. The other is that camp is a place that a girl can go with her already existing friends to experience something new and to build new memories together. When I was a camper, I was of the former type. I met new people that I eventually went on to working with at the camp itself years down the line. In any case, talk to your daughter before the camp season rolls around and see what she would prefer. For the first timer, it might be easier if they had a companion along. For the more experienced girl, it might be time to break those school year ties.
