Pros:Lots of features, easy install, provided software is great, comparable to more expensive models
Cons:Calibration may become slightly off.
The Bottom Line: Great bargin and a solid product.
If you're in the market for a modern joystick to play with any modern flight/combat simulator you're going to want alot of features: 3 axis control, tons of programmable buttons, easy to reach throttle control, and a view toggle switch just to name a few. Microsoft, Logitech, and others offer a plethora of joysticks with such features (even going so far as to offer force feedback), but all in the $50-70 price range. Thats fine for a diehard simulator fan, but for the average gamer $70 is expensive. Logitech has managed to combine most of the features of the high end models into this well-rounded and inexpensive model.
Features
Most important is the 3 axis feature that allows you to control pitch, roll, and yaw. Bargain basement joystick allow for only pitch and roll - forcing you to either buy a rudder set or settle for computer controlled yaw functions (which isn't very realistic).
The viewfinder switch is great for looking in various directions outside your plane without fumbling around the keyboard looking for the correct buttons. Even some of the middle-of-the-road models do not offer this feature.
Finally, you'll want some easy to reach programmable buttons for items such as the landing gear, radio, missiles, etc. On the main control there are 6 buttons all within reach of your thumb or trigger finger. There are an additional 6 on the base of the unit for buttons which only need to be used occasionally. With Logitech's provided software, modifying the button assignments is a simple task that can be performed in a few seconds.
Installation & Software
Plug in the USB cord, pop in the CD, and within a few minutes you're ready to go! This is the smoothest install I've ever gone through. The provided programming software is great for customizing the buttons (see above).
The only problem...
I seemed to have a slight calibration error. Using Windows ME, there doesn't appear to be anyway to solve this. The error is so slight that it is hardly noticeable, but a pain none the less. A calibration feature would be nice, if possible.
Conclusion
Overlooking the minor calibration issues, this joystick is a great buy. Competes with Logitech and Microsoft's top of the line models at half the cost. Gets a thumbs up from me.
