How To Choose A Weight Loss Program

LOSE WEIGHT, DON'T TAKE THE BAIT!

May 09 '01

The Bottom Line THE PROGRAMS ARE CHEAP TO JOIN, AND EXPENSIVE TO CARRY OUT, BY A LONG SHOT!

I am a social worker, teacher, and nutritionist. I worked as a nutritional counselor for Nutri-System for a long time. Jenny Craig, of course, was a Nutri-System person before she started her own business in Australia. (Oh, so THAT'S WHY THEY SEEMED SO SIMILAR!). The biggest money maker on the market, as glancing at any lady's magazine cover will show you, is weight loss! We all strive to be our best. Many do not realize how to do it on their own, or believe that will power is the key, along with education of how to eat. What most dieters, or those learning new ways to eat to live, instead of living to eat.......do not seem to 'catch' on these program pricings, is the food pricing.

The way that these companies make money is not by charging you a fortune to join up. The money lies in convincing you that the foods they offer are what you must eat to lose the weight, and (usually) to be allowed to be on the program, at all! I've sold a lot of these packaged, dried up foods. I know what they cost, and I know what you are getting. You are getting charged a heck of a lot of money in order for you NOT to bother to simply use portion control sense! Do you really believe that paying a couple of hundred dollars for your food, alone, for a short time period is reasonable? You wouldn't, if you saw what you were getting.

Get back to label reading! See what portion size you are buying, and see what is IN the box or the can or the wrap up. You still need to pay for your family's food, right? You still need to be able to go out to eat at a restaurant or at a friend or relative's, right? Do you really plan to take you little box of food and eat only that? I think not.

What I am trying to convey, is that education regarding nutrition is not a difficult thing to learn on your own. Portion control, drinking 8 glasses of water a day, exercising (walking counts!), and eating foods that NEED preparation are your answers. Remember, the boxes of foods on the grocery shelves seem to say to me, "The less you have to do to me, the more I cost, and the more calories, preservatives, and food colorings I have in me!".

Just cook yourself and your family food that is fresh, that is like a boarding house, etc.. I mean, having fresh potatoes (steamed), fresh carrots, a small piece of meat, if you like, are wonderful for you! Portion control is the only problem you CAN encounter with this way of living. As long as you believe you are ON A DIET, you will be looking for ways to cheat, and probably not EVEN realize it. Stop being on a diet. Learn portion control, and how to cook with water, not oil. Use vinegar and oil for dressings. Stop paying too much for foods that will fatten you up and send you headed for the nearest diet program offered, that will force you to spend more than double your grocery budget for a quarter of the food value!

Yes, I have had an eating problem. Yes, I have been over weight. No, I am no longer over weight. (This is thrown in, as some would believe I could never have had an eating problem, or weight problem.).
