Think ahead

May 09 '01

The Bottom Line The Sony MD-R900 represents probably the best there is at the moment (May 2001.)

When choosing a portable mini disc system you need to think ahead. Firstly, does your CD player have an optical output? If so, then make sure you either already have a mini disc deck or get a portable recorder with optical input.

Secondly, check which types of battery the unit uses. There's nothing actually wrong with the Sony NH-14WM - it's a good battery - but you do need to bear in mind its replacement costs. A player/recorder which is capable of running on conventional AA type batteries is going to be more flexible at the end of the day.

Last thing to watch out for is that the headphone output is up to it. Some of the latest players on the market only feature 3mw output - that really is not enough for loud levels and, if you enjoy your music loud, will probably end up having to purchase something like the excellent Airhead from Headroom.com.
