The Bottom Line Research, listen, and read all materials sent to you. Call the Camp. Learn who will be taking care of your child.

As a counselor in a program that certifies teenagers as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Aide at a summer camp, I've got a few tips for those of your sending your children off to aquatic related summer camps.

1) Don’t forget the basics….multiple bathing suits, several towels, waterproof sunscreen, basic hygiene items, goggles and a cap if they need one. You don’t know how many times I’ve seen kids come to camp with a single bathing suit and towel. I understand that some folks can only afford one of each, but keep in mind that in a residential camp setting, most camps don’t have dryers that the children are allowed to use. Borrow if need be.

2) Pack what the camp list tells you to pack! Most of the time these aren’t suggestions, and the items listed are things that the children will need during the week.

3) Make sure your child is physically ready to handle an athletic camp. Find out what the typical day and the typical workout is. Call the organization running the camp to find out this information. You may find out it’s a bit more than you expected, or a great deal less. It will save your child a great deal of aggravation if you find this out before hand.

4) Research your camp! If you have any questions, ever, most camps will be there to answer them for you. Tour the campsite. Please realize that most swimming camps aren’t there for children to learn how to swim. They are for already established swimmers who want to refine their skills, or in my case, for teenagers to learn basic water safety issues.

5) Lastly, find out about certifications, of both the people running the course, and if the child will earn any during the time spent at the camp. Red Cross runs many swimming related certifications that the children can achieve. Some of these certifications may be something that an older teen may want to put on a resume.
