| cracker24's Full Review: Dryel Starter Kit |
While working a variety of temp. jobs I often frequent the local drycleaner probably more than most as I want to put my best foot forwards all the time in the hopes of landing a permanent position. For those of you that don't know, I live in New Orleans and it is HOT and HUMID. So needless to say most fabrics don't hold up well during the summer. It was then that I came across the Dryel Starter Kit. For $10 the kit promises to dry clean your items in your own dryer and at at least half the cost.
The kit comes in a purple, green and white container that resembles a tub. The tub has a top that comes off easily enough as it is taped on there with manufacturer tape. The contents of the kit include: a Dryel instruction pamphlet, 1 Reusable Dryel bag,1 bottle of Dryel Stain Remover, 4 absorbent pads, 4 packages of pre-moistened Dryel Dryer-Activated Cloths.
The premise is that you place your clothes in the bag and the odors will be removed via the vents in the bag.
As with any product when looking to remove stains before you begin you should always check for colorfastness. To do this:
Moisten a folded white paper towel with several drops of the Dryel Stain remover.
Press against a hidden area of the garment.
If any dye is absorbed onto the paper towel, then do not use the stain remover for that garment.
No product works on all stains. This product works best on fresh stains. Large spills, heavy or ground in collar and set in or other difficult stains may still need commercial cleaning.
Directions for removing stains:
1) Place absorbent pad under stained area.
2) Use bottle tip and gentle pressure to "erase" the stain while applying solution. To have the best results work from outside of the stain toward the center.
3) The pad should begin to absorb the stain and as it does so, move to expose a clean area of pad. Continue erasing until stain is removed or no longer visible.
4) Discard pad when finished.
Before you put the garments into the dryer make sure to check for and remove all stains. After doing this load the bag with 1-4 garments. Make sure not to overfill the bag as you want the items to be able to move around freely. Also make sure to use only the specially marked Dryel bag.
Next, you need to open one of the 4 pouches containing the dryer activated cloths. Unfold the pre-moistened cloth and add to the Dryel bag.
Seal the bag by pressing the closure strips together like you would a Ziploc bag.
Place the Dryel bag in dryer and set on medium to high for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, the clothes may be slightly damp hang them up immediately to help the wrinkles fall out. Some fabrics may require additional ironing.
Throw away the cloth but save the bag as it is designed for 20 washes.
My experience with the product is that it worked very well for my needs. I don't get large stains on my suits with any regularity and basically use them to help eliminate the perspiration stains often found on dry clean only clothes. In the South, where we sweat alot due to the climate it works real well. I also found it to be very effective in eliminating odors such as smoke. Working in a casino environment as I have, you can only imagine the smells my clothes pick up. For $10 its cheaper than the dry cleaner and works just as well. You can do 20 load with the bag though you will have to get refills on the cloths and pads.
Warnings:
Keep out of reach of children.
Do not use any other type of bag as it may damage clothes or dryer.
If you notice bag holes before 20 loads stop using it. Your dryer may be running at a very high temperature.
Do not use in laundromat cleaners as the high temp. may cause bag to melt.
Tips:
Check your fabrics before using the stain remover.
Treat stains before putting in bags.
Make sure to empty the lint tray.
Put similar items together in the bag. You wouldn't want wool to end up all over another fabric.
Don't over load the bag.
Make sure you hangup immediately after finishing the load so wrinkles don't have time to set.
I recommend this as a cheap alternative way to dry-clean your clothes. For $10 you can do 20 loads and if you do one or two suits or outfits at a time. The amount of money you can save is high. At $10 you get the whole kit. This gives you the option of trying it without spending a large amount of money.
The product claims to work on wools, linens, silks and rayons. I have had success with silks, linens, and polyester. We don't get too many opportunities to wear wool down here.
