The bonfires remind me (Reply to this comment)
by missgussie
of the Celtic/Druidic traditional Beltane (ancestor of May Day in the States and probably other cultures), celebrated earlier in the year at the first of May. The Druid priests would kindle a new fire, which everyone would take a flame from to rekindle the home fires and drive away the winter's diseases and misfortunes, and whose festivals celebrate life and the rebirth of the earth's bounty.
How fascinating to hear of similar modern celebrations close to the Isles.

Tivoli Gardens (Reply to this comment)
by realtraveller
Several years ago, I saw the Midsummer's Eve celebrations at the Tivoli in Copenhagen with the bonfires and the witch burnings and all. We also saw the student's in their caps riding all over Copenhagen in carriages singing and celebrating the end of exams. It was a great time and very memorable. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

. . . I are headed to Scandinavia this summer.
I will now have to check our itinerary to see what dates we are in Denmark.
Thanks for an excellent posting.
