Nodame Cantabile (live action version) (Reply to this comment)
by justjuice2
Many readers will probably be unfamiliar with this work, which is a drama series of 11 episodes, 2 movie-length specials, and recently 2 true movies, about students in the Music School of a university in Japan. Although it is in Japanese, if you can get hold of the the subtitled version then you will be inspired every time you watch this. It is packed to the brim with classical music, humor, and emotion. Before this, Amadeus was naturally my favorite work of film relating to classical music, but I have only watched that movie about 5 times. I have watched Nodame Cantabile about 10 times, and I never grow bored. At times when I wonder about the purpose of life, I think that no matter what happens, having had the chance to watch this drama series has made my life worth living.

Re: "The Red Violin" --> Interlude (Reply to this comment)

Funny...I've been searching for 'Interlude' for a while now and it's not available, as far as I can tell. It was released in 1968 and was a tearjerker, but a pretty good one. Great classical music, too.

All I could think as I read this was - When are they going to mention Platoon?! I noticed someone else mentioned it in comments but as i already opened this window thought I would mention it as well. Also recently- the use of O Fortuna as the opening of the JackAss movie was effective and hysterical:)

That's a really cool search feature for IMDB. (I've always said, imdb is the first killer app of the Internet) I'm curious now what 33 movies Glass appears in.

Ah, excalibur I always meant to see, (and Carmina Burana is one of my favorite pieces).

Amadeus of course, hand's down number one, though I was told Immortal Beloved was a pale immitation, though I suppose a pale immitation to such a great movie can still be great.

The Red Violin is on my list "to see" along with about 350 other DVDs on Netflix queue (some of which I've already seen).

The movie you are referring to is Interlude, but it doesn't seem to be available via VHS or DVD.

I was wondering what you thought of "The Red Violin" (Reply to this comment)
by frazzledspice
I found the history of the violin and its owners to be fascinating, and loved the music.

I'm also thinking, dimly in my memory, about a romantic movie, circa 1970 or so, with Oskar Werner as a conductor having an affair with "?" I remember crying buckets over it when I was young and foolish.

Great list - makes me want to put in my Apocalypse Now DVD just for that one sequence.

And good call in mentioning Excalibur.

No idea what that crack is supposed to mean... If you watch the better quality cartoons like Warner Brothers, they use a LOT of classical music as background.

listen to the music in Platoon sometime. It's a beautiful mournful classical piece that sets the tone of the movie at the outset, but right now, the name and composer escape me.

I'm still a sucker for top-ten lists, and this one was excellent. (Though I would have added He Got Game to that list, for underscoring basketball games with Aaron Copland).

Super.

Was being introduced to Wendy Carlos. I think her interpertations of classical pieces are phenomonal.
