And I thought I had seen them all... (Reply to this comment)
by maceywuesthoff
I thought I had seen pretty much all cult movies, but you had a whole list there of stuff I should check out. Especially Blood Feast, as someone recommended to me long ago.
But the main reason I wanted to post this comment is to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for acknowledging what a pile of cat sh*t drenched in cat p*ss the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" was. And thanks to everyone else on this site for agreeing. Until I wandered into this forum, quite by accident, everyone I've ever met loved that movie. I was beginning to think I was the only person in the world who hadn't become totally brainwashed by that sh*t.

Cult Classics (Reply to this comment)
by shadow8
Mike--
What can I say man? This is another tremendous list. Of course, I have seen like only half of the films you mentioned, but it looks like I'll have plenty of movies to seek out this summer.
Mad props to you for including The Story of Ricky man. That flick was the coolest goriest action flick I have ever seen. The head-crushing scene and the "meat-grinder" moment are classics. I was repulsed, but I couldn't help laugh at the film's dark humor. I gotta see that flick again...
I'm kinda disappointed you left out one of my favorite cult classics: Meet the Feebles. I never looked at the Muppets quite the same way again after watching that sick (and hilarious) Peter Jackson classic.
Great stuff man. F*ckin' A!

Well Mike, that's a heck of a list you've got there, but as always I haven't seen half the films you mention. I'll have to add a few more to my "must see" list. Glad to see the Evil Dead flicks on there, and really glad to see Dawn of the Dead so high on the list. Great job oh horror king, as always.

Doesn't it all get a little monotonous? You are the horror-cult god, and it pains me to say that because before I discovered Epinions, I thought I was that particular god.
I look forward to your reviews like I do my favorite TV shows. Seriously.
(Note: I only have 2 favorite TV shows: The Simps & The Phils.)
If they ever make a remake of Superman 2, I hope you get the Terence Stamp role. It would be so cool to hear you scream "KNEEL before Brack!"
See ya soon.

A fascinating list that I have printed out and saved.... (Reply to this comment)
by NFP
...for reference, though, in truth, most of the "gore" ones are not my genre of choice.
Still, your descriptions are excellent, and I have a feeling I'm going to check a couple of them out, especially MST 3000.
Within your "violence" genre, I have a feeling the darkly humorous "Very Bad Things" will have developed cult status within a few years. It bombed at the box office, but I, even for one who generally avoids violent flicks, found this one's "tongue-in-cheek" style too good to resist loving.
Great job, Mike.

Cult!?! (Reply to this comment)
by Destinys-Child
One of my favorite films, if you consider it a cult film" is Dead Alive. I never laughed so much at a horrible movie in my life.
"I Kick a$$ for the lord"
LOL
I thought I might have seen the Last House movie you mentioned, but the one I was thinking of was Last House on the Left, which was a very twisted movie in its own right.
Great List

You named a few of my own favorites, and a few that I haven't seen but will make it a point to see now.
Dawn of the Dead is my favorite horror flick.
Good job!

love the folks who feel the need to leave a comment on every review they rate w/o knowing a thing about the article itself...
I'm not surprised by your list in this ever so broad category, Mike... and actually I'm quite relieved that there's no mention of Toxic Avenger (or Troma for that matter - the idea of purposely trying to create a cult film nauseates me). And Rocky Horror was only worth mentioning to say you hate it. Another relief.
Regardless, the topic is too limiting as you've noted. I could easily come up w/10 anime cult films... ah well, at least you took the unconventional route (but I knew you would).

Lisa,
IFC actually sent me a screener of the Argento documentary a few weeks back. Good stuff, that.
Riki-Oh is a riot...gross and over-the-top, but a lot of fun. Cannibal Holocaust is a lot more hardcore.
Mike--Killer Tomatoes should have gotten a mention, but like I said, this category is just way too broad. I forgot to mention Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom, too.

Evil Dead 2 and Susperia are great films. I recently saw a documentary on Argento called An Eye for Horror that used Susperia to define his visual (& audio) style.
I never heard of Riki Oh, but sounds like it's worth seeing. Now if I can only find it and Cannibal Holocaust at a local video store.

Haven't heard of many of these films. My daughter (14) does watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 every Saturday morning, even though it means getting up at 9 am (a sacrifice indeed for a teen). I've caught it a few times myself, and, yes, I laughed. Wonder if she knows there's a movie?
Enjoyed it

Re: Wonderful+look+at+cult+films! (Reply to this comment)
by Mike_Bracken, in Movies
Last House on Dead End Street was directed by 'Victor Janos'.
No one associated with the film ever went on to do anything else, and there's a great deal of mystery concerning Janos himself. Some people assert that it was a pseudonym for a more famous director, but no one really knows.
Try and find an uncut version if you can--it's a weird and creepy little film.

I have a question though. Who directed Last House on Dead End Street (or whatever it was called). It sounds like an interesting film and I'd like to pick it up.

Re: Great+takes (Reply to this comment)
by Mike_Bracken, in Movies
Yeah, this category is WAY too broad.
I don't think Kubrick's film is really a cult film, but I like it, and don't think enough people see it, so I threw it in with the honorable mentions.
Leaving Waters off was a major oversight on my part. I just totally forgot about him by the time I got to the end.

I wouldn't know where to start on such a list... this subcategory needs more subcategorization. John Waters would have to have something on it tho. I didn't realize that Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange could be considered a cult film.
