Clean racing fan for everyone

Written: Dec 11 '01
Pros:More than 400 cars, 20 tracks and a killer soundtrack.
Cons:Graphics not improved since last game and only 6 cars on screen at once.
The Bottom Line: The game offers great cars and driving fun for car enthusiasts and good multipayer modes but the graphics aren't very good and the cars on screen are limited to 6.

The Gran Turismo league is a famous racing league but is it true that there are 1080hp cars that can do 0-150 in 10 seconds? Sometimes you find out things that will simply astound you in GT2. Things you never knew before. Yes, the HKS stockcar can go that fast but it handles like crap.

You not only get to race cars in this game, you modify it, raise money, get racing mods including kits and a whole total paint job. You can change transmission, add turbo kits, change suspension, change ride height easily (even though you can't tell the car's dropped)! You can also make the car lighter and so forth. However, what's really fun about this game is the difficulty levels. Anyone can play...

You start out with an sufficient amount of cash to purchase a new car. I bought a '93 Civic Si Hatchback. Yes, I know it's a cheap "rice-rocket" but I love Civics and especially when it only costs $7000 credits. I also like the fact that Civics, especially Si's can be easily modified and of course, they're also very light so they corner nicely.

The races are divided into different leagues for different cars. The easiest cup is the Sunday Cup which you start with. You can simply keeep racing here to get creds and once you have enough, you have three decisions: fix up your current car, fix up the car you won for beating the Sunday Cup (only first time beating it, repeated 1st places at same Cup will not award another car) or buy a new car when you have enough credits. Of course, you can always sell your cars that you win but I'd say keep them because the car you get for winning races are usually rare or special that cannot be repurchased in car dealers.

Speaking of car dealers, there are many manufactures to choose from - all real and all provide real models of cars. However, since the game was made in 98, only 98 or older models can be seen, however, some cars do come in 98-99 models. What's fun about the game is you can race your friends who also have the game and even trade cars from eachothers' garages!

In multiplayer mode, you can either do Arcade mode which lets you choose from an array of cars OR you can use your cars that you've fixed up or even trade them with your opponent which is a really realistic feature and fun.

The replays in the games are also fun to watch. If you do the endurace races which are races with 50 laps, you can watch the replay, the whole 50 laps! You can also save them to your memory card. This is why I recommend a mega-memory card instead of the general 15 block ones.

In simulation, the learning curve can take weeks. However, once you have mastered the cornering of the different cars, you can win races easily. Some exotic cars include: Viper, Mustang (Cobra), Acura NSX, BMW 840 and more.

Since the game builds on realism, the sound is superb including the engine noises and if you have surround sound, wow, it really helps because if there are four cars around you, that's exactly what you hear! Four engines around you but if you only have 2 speakers, it will be mixed but you will still have a great experience and tell where the cars are.

You should get this game if you like rice rockets, exotic cars or just wanted to fix up cars. The best part is a 7 year old can sit down and have fun with this!
