Game Pads are not always the answer...May 13 '01 Write an essay on this topic.

The Bottom Line Look into all the other option to make sure that a Gamepad is the right buy for you. Outside of Sports games they aren't that helpful.
Many people view Gamepads as something that they must have to outfit their PC toy collection. Having played all types of games from sports, to first person shooters to strategy games, I have found that in most genre's of games they are not that helpful. Sports games such as Madden NFL and NBA Live that were first developed on a console such as the Playstation are the only games in which Game Pads are any help at all. These types of games were originally designed to be using a gamepad and nothing else. Because of this fact anything else that you use to play these games is much less effective. The only downside to Gamepads in this situation is the fact that they might not be set up the same way as the console controller is. As a result of this the same game play experience is NOT possible. Any other genre of game will run into great difficulty using a gamepad. Most good first person shooters (more commonly called FPS’s) are designed to use a lot of different controls in different combinations to play the game to its fullest extent. This results in these types of games being designed for use with a mouse and keyboard. With a gamepad the number of controls that you have is very limited and is almost impossible to use in conjunction with another device such as a keyboard. Should you happen to use your gamepad online in any internet community be ready to die over and over again. The lack of versatility and quick movements will leave you pray to almost any intermediate player. As in FPS’s the world of strategy is not friendly to the gamepad community. In games such as Starcraft, Age of Empires and others, it is a game of speed. Fast movements, flying to and from different points of the screen are the key to the game. With a gamepad this is NOT at all possible. Yet not all is bad for those that insist on having a Gamepad. Online auctions and small computer retailers will usually offer a great deal on any Gamepad that you could possibly seek. But for those that wish to use it for everyday gaming outside of the sports world, make sure that a Gamepad is what you really want to be spending your money on. |
