A product of Diageo of North America, a premium- beverage company, Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is a distilled Puerto Rican Rum with added spices. Popular as an alternative to ordinary rum, Captain Morgan is often used as a substitute to “spice up” ordinary beverages with its unique blend of flavors.
Basic Characteristics of This Rum:
Captain Morgan is light brown/gold in color, similar to weakened iced tea. The body of this rum is clear and well- filtered and it emits a candy- like aroma, similar to the smell you experience in a kitchen where candy is being cooked.
The taste of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum is spicy but not hot or overly spiced like some liqueurs. I could detect flavors like vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, and what seemed like different flavored extracts, like you would find in a baker’s cabinet. I could also detect a slight taste of butter. All of these ingredients combine into a taste that is sweeter than most other rum. Even the finish, which is bitter and alcoholic, is not as harsh as regular rum.
Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum contains 35 percent alcohol (70 proof), making it a little weaker than ordinary rum. A one- ounce (30 ml) serving of this product contains 60 calories, with no fat or protein, 8 grams of sodium, and only .3 grams of carbohydrates.

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum was named for the legendary Captain Morgan, a sailor who was known for his love of good rum. The label of this brand of Captain Morgan features a colorful cartoon depiction of Captain Morgan with one foot on the ground and the other on a barrel with a ship sailing in the background. This label makes Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum one of the more recognizable bottles on a liquor store shelf.
This rum is much smoother and easier to drink than ordinary dry rum. Don’t get the wrong idea, however, and think that this product has no harshness at all. It still contains an alcohol by volume level of 35 percent and you can most assuredly taste the alcohol if you drink it straight or on the rocks. But the alcohol taste isn’t as obvious as it is with regular light and dark rum, thanks to the added spices.
Speaking of the spicy character, this is the main reason why people try Captain Morgan Spice Rum and the primary reason for this spirit’s popularity. Mixed with other beverages, the taste that stands out most is vanilla. When mixed with Coca- Cola, for example, the result is a drink that tastes like Vanilla Coke- much tastier than an ordinary rum and coke that so many barflies like to order. Mixed with Seven- Up (Captain’s Cream Soda, mentioned above), the final result is a drink that has the look and flavor of a glass of cream soda. Other spices are present, too, like cinnamon and maybe some nutmeg. But the flavor that stands out when added to a mixed drink is that of vanilla.
Captain Morgan Spiced Rum can be used in most any drink recipe that calls for regular light rum. More often than not, the result is a sweeter and better- tasting drink. However, there are some mixed drinks where I still prefer the taste of regular light or dark rum over Captain Morgan. One such drink is a daiquiri. Made with Captain Morgan, daiquiris have the added flavor of vanilla. Some might like this added flavor, but I would rather taste fruit when I drink a daiquiri. The same is true of a few other mixed drinks.
Because of the added dimension of sweetness, most drinks made with Captain Morgan Spiced Rum will prove to be smoother, tastier, easier to drink, and more acceptable to finicky party guests. But on the negative side, the more easy drinkability means that Captain Morgan’s can catch up on you and knock you flat on your derriere if you’re not careful. Since most all of the mixed drinks calling for Captain Morgan Spiced Rum are sweet and have almost no harshness or alcoholic taste, it is very easy to pound one after another without even realizing how many you have consumed. Don’t be surprised if you stand up after a few too many drinks at the table and the world starts spinning around you. This product is good- tasting, and that’s precisely why it can slowly sneak up on you without knowing it.
Those who are worried about calorie content can ease their dietary fears by substituting similar, low- calorie beverages in place of the high- calorie beverages called for in the recipe. For example, many people like to use Diet Coke in place of regular Coke when they make a Captain’s Cola. This lowers the calories by a significant amount, but the taste is not quite as intense and flavorful as before.
Overall, Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is a good- tasting liquor and a nice change of pace from ordinary rum. I don’t drink much liquor, but when I do, I like to taste something a little different from the ordinary and I often reach for products that are less traditional while still holding on to a certain degree of quality. Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is an interesting liquor with the added taste of vanilla and spices to spruce up drinks calling for ordinary rum. It doesn’t make every drink better, but it does make a nice change from the dry, alcoholic taste of light rum.
