Once Proud Hotel Now Sadly Neglected

Written: Jul 13 '04
Pros:Best beach on Virginia Beach.
Cons:Service is HORRIBLE! Poor maintenance. Management clearly just does not care at all.
The Bottom Line: Just about the worst hotel experience I can imagine. Avoid at all costs!

I had stayed at the Cavalier many times over the years, so when it was time for a quick 4-day beach getaway, I looked forward to introducing the Cavalier to my 3-year-old daughter.

Sadly, the Cavalier that I once knew and loved no longer exists and has been replaced by a dilapidated facility with management who clearly could not care less about their guests.

The problems there were far, FAR too numerous to mention them all, but I will cite a few.

Our first night there, we had dinner at the hotel. The service was HORRIBLE and slow, despite the fact that the restaurant was practically empty before 8:00 PM (that should have been a clue to me). Another party sat down about 10-15 minutes after we did, but they had already finished their meal before ours even arrived at out table. This was especially odd because they had ordered the same things that we did!

The waiter finally admitted to me later that they had given this party our food by mistake. Then, after waiting what seemed forever with a tired and hungry little girl, our food arrived - cold. My wife's medium burger was solid dark grey through-and-through. The french fries looked like they were dethawed and cooked in a microwave, and they tasted horrible.

And yet, I could have tolerated all of that, EXCEPT for what happened next. As my wife and I were finishing, my 3-year-old daughter's milk finally arrived. She took one sip and said, "Daddy, the milk has a bad taste." I have to admit, I ignored her at first since I knew she was tired from our long trip. But when she complained again, I smelled the milk. It smelled bad. Then I took a small taste. YUCK! It was rancid. I looked at the small carton that the waiter had left on the table. The milk was FIVE DAYS PAST ITS EXPIRATION DATE!!! Unbelievable and unforgivable. They served rancid, expired milk to my 3-year-old daughter.

The restaurant manager's response to this was to offer to not charge us for the beverages (Gee, thanks!).

Of course, I couldn't even bring myself to dine at the hotel again during our stay, which made things terribly inconvenient when lunchtime came while we were relaxing at the beach or pool.

The service during the rest of our stay was no better, and I could go on and on, but the story above should be sufficient to give you a good idea of guest service at the Cavalier.

By the way, the facilities are also a joke. Our partial-beach view room had a TINY little TV which must have been connected to some rooftop antenna that was accidentally pointing out to sea. We could not receive a decent picture on a single channel. The beds were small and uncomfortable. Etc., etc.

Internet access? Ha, Ha, Ha - surely you jest!

In conclusion, unless and until there is a COMPLETE overhaul in management, I will never stay at the Cavalier ever again. All in all, I have to say that it was the worst hotel I had ever visited.
