After looking at about every car in the near-luxury class, I purchased the Infiniti I35. It blends comfort, elegance, and performance in a sharp-looking (but admittedly conservative) package.
EXTERIOR:
The exterior design of the I35 is sleek and good looking, but at the same time a bit boring. Nevertheless, it's hard not to like it. The shape is sleek and aerodynamic, and the xenon headlights are amazing. My only complaint is what seems to be a slightly mis-aligned hood.
INTERIOR:
The inside is absolutely gorgeous, with rich leather and convincing fake-wood throughout. Seats are supurbly comfortable, front and rear, and the car is very roomy. It's quiet inside, with the exception of minor road noise, probably caused by the standard all-season performance tires. Complaints are a lack of headroom front and rear (but it is 6-footer adequate) and minor dashboard creaks over bumps.
THE DRIVE:
The I35 offers secure handling, percise steering, and a smooth ride. A few large bumps make their way into the cabin, but, for the most part, you'll get a very smooth, comfortable ride that never feels detatched. Handling is not sports-car nimble, but it is very secure, even at high speeds. Acceleration is extremely brisk, taking about 7 seconds to reach 60mph. The engine and transmission are smooth.
OTHER NOTES:
The trunk of this Infiniti is big but not huge, and very usefully shaped. I was able to pack in two beach chairs, one large cooler, and many towels without much hassle. This car comes very well equipped with just about everything standard except heated seats, satellite radio, and a navigation system. The price also undercuts most of the competetions.
OTHER CARS I DROVE:
Acura TL
Volvo S60
Nissan Maxima
Toyota Avalon
Lexus RX300 (used 2002 model)
