The SB Live! Platinum is an amazing sound card package. The sound card itself is worth a lot. The EMU10K1 chipset and EAX extensions make this a very powerful sound card. With every game I've played with my Sound Blaster card, sound quality has been excellent, with realistic 3D effects. Use a 4 speaker setup for a great gaming experience. So far I haven't heard anything better.
This is Creative's top of the line card, and so it features digital input/output, if you have digital speakers. The new Platinum uses a Livedrive! that is installed in a front 5.25 inch drive bay, meaning all the connections are on the front instead of back, a much easier way of doing things.
The software bundle is one of the most incredible I have ever seen with any product. You get a wide range of music and game software, all full versions! Sonic Foundry's excellent Sound Forge XP 4 sound editing program, Cakewalk 8 Gold, Need for Speed 4, Thief, Rollcage, Viavoice, and a bunch of Creative programs. All full versions.
The software bundle alone justifies the high price. But if you're looking for a new sound card and willing to pay a bit extra, you can't go wrong with this one.
