The Bottom Line While the warranty is still in effect, use licensed accessories; however, if the warranty has lapsed, there is nothing wrong with unlicensed accessories...
When it comes to Sony Playstation and its many accessories, it’s easy to see how you can easily spend tons of money and only end up with a few accessories. But, alas, there is a solution to that—accessories by companies like Interact, Pelican, etc. that are less than half of the cost than those made by Sony. Don’t believe me? Look at this: You have earned tons of money on Gran Turismo 2, but you have to stop playing to cook dinner (no comments from the peanut gallery). Now, in older consoles you had one of two options. You could either a) pause the game and hope nobody messes with it or b) you turn off the game and start from scratch. With the Sony Playstation you now have the option of purchasing a memory card to save your games for future play. So you start shopping around and you realize to purchase a Sony card is $19.99! That is the price of some of the game titles—but wait! Right next to it on the shelf is a memory card for the Playstation by Pelican and it is only $9.99! Of course, you are going to purchase the memory card by Pelican, right? Well, you might want to think about it twice. Here’s why: The reason why the memory card from Sony is $19.99 is because it is a licensed product of Sony and Sony stands by the product. The memory card from Pelican is not licensed by Sony and Sony does not support it in any way. So, because this is not a licensed product from Sony, using it on your Sony Playstation console will void any warranty your Playstation might have because according to Sony they do not support these products and they affect the performance of your Playstation and cause it to fail. Many consumers do not realize this is Sony’s stance, but it is in fact true. If you read the warranty fine print that comes with your console, it clearly states this. So, unless the product you are purchasing for your Playstation console is licensed by Sony and has the Sony or Sony Playstation symbol on it, you are voiding your warranty with Sony. So folks, here is a little advice when it comes to purchasing accessories for your Sony Playstation: while cheaper is better for your pocket book, it might not be better for you in the long run. If you have a brand new Playstation, I would advice you to purchase the licensed accessories for it just in case something should happen to your Playstation during your warranty period and you don’t end up losing more money because you tried to save some from the start. On the other hand, if your Playstation is more than a year or two old and the warranty has already expired, go for the cheaper accessories. I have done both purchasing the licensed accessories during the warranty period and the unlicensed accessories after my warranty expired, and I never noticed a difference in the performance of my console or the accessories. While I believe the voiding of the warranty by using unlicensed products and their claim is just a ploy by Sony to make more money, I think that there is no difference between the products with the Sony label and those without—of course, this is just my Epinion… |
