I thought that I would also ring in considering the New XT Forester. I was on the market for a new SUV and drove about all there was available in the marketplace. The turbo Forester was the only one that had me smiling the whole time.
A side note about the non-turbo model. It does get better gas mileage and is completely adequate, however is not anywhere as fun to drive as the turbo.
Likes:
Turbo engine makes it just fly. I reenter my teenage mentality on occassion racing guys at stoplights and have yet to be beat.
The layout of the interior is very intuitive and well designed.
The photochromic mirror is a definate buy and I love having a compass included.
The stereo sounds really good, not too much bass, just a nice rich sound.
Plenty of cargo room.
All wheel drive system is top knotch. I have not lacked for traction anywhere as of yet.
Did I mention that it is blazing fast????
Cons:
I DO get great gas mileage for an SUV, but in the low 20's it is still a bit low. Also, the car asks for premium gas (keep that in mind).
I agree with the other reviewer that the tires are for SUV's and ride a bit rough as such.
Finally, the heated windshield is VERY expensive to replace. I opted to add windsheild replacement onto my insurance plan.

After a year of ownership. This is one wonderfull vehicle. It has traveled through blizzards and rain and sunshine. It drives like a sports car off the line but is able to go offroading. I would highly recomend this vehicle to anyone. No problems at all with the engineering fit and finish or performance.
I would like to mention that the stock tires are very poor quality but that is easy to fix for a few bucks.
25k miles in the first year, wahoo!!!
