My Compaq Presario X1000 is actually a Canadian model labelled X1010CA. It's actually built by HP still maintains the quality Compaq products have been known for.
This model is ideal for personal use. It has an Intel Centrino 1.4ghz CPU, 15.4" screen with a 1280x800 resolution, 512mb PC2100 DDR RAM, 60gb 4200rpm hard disk, CDRW/DVD combo drive, an SD card and a PCMCIA slot. It lacks a serial port as well as a PS2 port for external keyboards and mouse (but these now come with USB connectors).
The Centrino was designed for mobile computing and it has a 1mb cache compared with the 512k for the P4 CPUs (but the new P4 Prescott have the same 1mb cache on the chip). The performance of the 1.4 ghz X1000 is comparable to a P4 2.4ghz laptop but with a far better battery life. The wireless feature can be turned off by an external button to save battery.
