| flash-hammer's Full Review: ISS Pro - Value for PlayStation 1 |
I was really shocked when I bought this game. Every other ISS game I had played
Was good. So surely ISS Pro for the PlayStation would be. It was arguably the most well known.
The game is a football title, and was released a long time ago in the mid-to late 90s to a pretty good reception from PSX owners all over, and has led to the release of several sequels and spin-offs.
The game is missing the ISS staple that is scenario mode, and only offers the regular league, cup and friendly options to gamers.
Graphically, the game is poor. No other word for it. At the time it would have been barely passable. The players are all tall, skinny, with perfectly straight backs that look about as realistic as the computer generation people in the Dire Straights Money for Nothing video. They are also animated atrociously. Look at the way they go down when they are fouled. They slide their limbs in perfect suspension aligned by their sides, onto their backs where they lie for a minute.
The stadiums and pitch look ok, but the players are just plain crappy.
The game has the worst commentator in any football, no sports, game ever half the stuff he says is complete crap 㦊 seconds into the game a minute before full time is the prime example. The crowd sounds ok, but this moron babbling over them spoils any redeeming features they might offer. His legendary quote has to be screaming Schorchio! when someone hits a ball in the general direction of goal. Even a pass occasionally brings it out.
The controls while on the ball look like this:
L2:1-2
R1: Sprint
R2: Centering
Triangle: Through Ball
Square: Shoot
Circle: Long Pass
X: Pass
And Off the ball
L1: Change Player
R1: Sprint
Square: Clear
Circle: Slide Tackle
X: Step in Tackle
I guess you could say that these respond ok, because while the player reacts when you press the button, the passes are quite frankly woeful. The through balls the same, and the shots are just plain crap. There is no way to play good football in this game. Sprinting actually does little to your speed, and just makes it harder to control the player, which is already a taxing process seeing as it takes him a year to respond to D-Pad commands.
The less said about the tackling the better. The step in, or Press as the manual calls it involves running into your opponent. Slide tackles connect with the ball 1 time out of ten.
Scoring good goals does not happen. I once scored a free kick that was decent actually, but seeing as I was trying to play a cross into the box I dont think it counts.
Gameplay wise the game doesnt get much better. The referee makes decisions at random, giving free kicks for players being tackled fairly and on one occasion giving my player a straight red card for running into my opponent. Needless to say, this game only ever gets played to laugh at how bad it is.
While this review may be a bit on the short side, thats because I have wasted enough of my life playing this, and I dont want to waste any more thinking and writing about it. There has to be literally hundreds of football games for the PlayStation, and I really cant offer any reason to take this game over any of the others. Even real horror shows like Olympic Soccer and Adidas Power Soccer at least have comedy on their side, this is just plain horrible. Out of the 5 ISS games I have played, this is the only one that has been anything but good. ISS2 for the Xbox wasnt perfect, but it was at least playable, which is more than can be said for this wretched turd of a game.
No one should own ISS Pro. Its crap.
