Octane vs. Heptane (Reply to this comment)
by countmacula
Nice review for the most part. Just thought I'd add a clarification: The "Octane additives" you speak of are the stuff of fairy tales. Nothing is "added" to the gasoline. The octane rating refers to the percentage of the fuel that is embodied in the octane hydrocarbon chain (i.e. eight carbon atoms linked like a chain), 87%, 89%,92%,.... The remaining fraction of the fuel is heptane,(six carbon atoms linked). Heptane detonates much earlier than octane and hence the less heptane present the more you can compress the fuel/air mixture prior to detonation.

Why the SH? (Reply to this comment)

Well as you stated octane in and of itself will not help an engine run any cleaner. What you did not mention is that all gasoline sold in the U.S. that is 91/92 octane will help your engine run cleaner, it usually contains slightly higher levels of detergent along with the fact that the quality of the cleaners is higher.
You also mentioned that octane will not give you more power and you are not totally correct. Example: if memory serves correct the Acura Legend calls for a fuel with an octane rating of at least 91. No harm will be done using a lower octane, however the engine management system will compensate by reducing the advance of the timing. Retarding the ignition timing will cause a loss in horsepower.
While the information you have here is okay, a better explanation of when you will and will not gain horsepower for example would make this a more balanced opinion.
I almost forgot, welcome to Epinions!

like the others said, add some headings and space between paragraphs. It also helps to compose in microsoft word to take advantage of the spelling and grammaer check and then copy and paste the results in. I didn't at first, but people seemed much happier after I did.
but well informed opinion. thanks.
