a "techie" couldn't make me laugh! :) Great job on this editorial: thorough, interesting, and accurate! I, too, loved the example review you used, and found it hilarious!

By the way, read your Epinions userpage bio . . . . would love to hear about Scandinavian society sometime (hint, hint--I don't get to travel much, and a first-hand account is so much better than a history book). Could it be a "General:non-fiction" or "History" editorial in the making?

and I'll stay away from the Frobnoggi because I am sure my nostrils are too delicate (although to this American, the Frobnoggi sounds like an Ikea-like name:)).

I have never written out exactly what I do in a review, but I pretty much follow a similar process. I do put a lot of detail in my review, but my longest reviews are about expensive electronics or household items, and I personally like knowing lots of details before parting with that kind of money. I've found you just can't make everyone happy when it comes to details; some people will write that your epinion was too long while others will ask you about additional details!

Congrats on the advisor hat,

Loved your example, especially the dialogue - and a great example of getting a serious point over with humour. Well done!

Arthur, thanks for your comment and your keen observation. I have corrected the text accordingly.

Your point about playing it safe and providing too much detail rather than too little detail is certainly valid.

I think that over the course of my next few reviews I will attempt to strike a better balance between thoroughness and brevity.

Happy writing!

as I see it, you have 10,000 total hits, not 10,000 non-member hits -- but give it a few more days.

Aside from that, I generally agree with you, in terms of the way I write reviews, but some people would say that you can have too much detail in a review.
