| smonette's Full Review: Creative Labs Nomad MuVo NX 256MB MP3 Player |
Was going to buy the regular Nomad MUVO from Walmart until I read the all the troubles people were having with them. At the same time I was looking at them, they released the MUVO NX. From What I read the company fixed all the problems from the regular version in the NX model. So once again I was interested.
Finally aquired one from Crutchfield, and I cant say enough how impressed I was in dealing with this company. They were the only ones on the net to actually have this product in stock so close to Xmas '03(3 weeks!). Not only did they have this product, but they had a $50 rebate and gave a free set of xtra earbuds. Had the product in 3 days!
Product worked flawlessly right out of the box. Thought I had a problem because I couldnt get player to turn on, but after consulting the directions (duh!)I found that you had to hold the play button down a few seconds for it to power up. A great feature as you cant accidentally turn player on or off wasting batteries.
Design:
Player is small enough to fit into any pants pocket or you can use the Armband that comes with it which is really handy! It's great for anyone who works out, jogs, or does anything physical. It is also nice of them to include an extra power pack for quick easy changes. Player is very durable, I have dropped mine many times and have had no problems with it at all. Buttons are easy to use and navigate within the player menus. What is really nice about this player is that you can plug it into any USB port and have it show up as a removable drive. It will transport not only 4 hours mp3 music, but can be used for other files or folders to transfer info between computers. One of the nicest features is that it has a backlit display that tells you the song that is playing. The backlight will come on when you use the navigation button and will shut off after a few seconds to further conserve battery life.
Batteries:
The company claims up to 11 hours continuous playback time. I have yet to test this for continuous play, but with intermittent play with rechargable batteries I get 8-9 hours out of the one AAA battery. Not bad in my eyes. I have read that you do get more with regular batteries, but in the long run rechargable is more cost effective.
Sound:
This is really where the player shines with the right earbuds. The buds that come with the player have a really "tinny" sound to them and dont really sound that great. Due to complaints from the masses, Crutchfield decided to include a set of Seinnheiser earbuds with the player for free. Like I said they are a great company to deal with. With the new earbuds the playback was noticably better, but I bought a really good set of earbuds from Radioshack made by OPTIMUS Catalog #: 33-1167 which came with a carry pouch and extra foam earpieces. They were $22 but well worth the money as they are noise reducing (I wear them while mowing and hear without any ouside noise) and they give crisp crystal clear sound. They also allow the volume to crank up with no noise or distortion.
Software:
The only real problem I had was with the software. When importing songs from my other music libraries it failed to include some of the songs. I think it might have to do with copyright songs, but there was an easy fix to the problem. I did a search for the song with Windows and then dragged and dropped to the removable drive in My Computer. The song then showed up as a content on the removable drive through the Creative software, just not its library.
Overall:
Overall I love the player for my needs. 4 hours of mp3 is enough for any workout, airplane ride, or pastime you may have and you do have the option to convert files to wma for 8 hours playback with a sacrifice of some battery life. Durable, great sound with proper earbuds, and easy to use. I paid $150 in the end for the player with the rebate. As of 7/27/04 you can purchase the player from WWW.crutchfield.com for $129. A great bargain for what you get.
