Not sure about all this.... (Reply to this comment)
by yoyobunny
Truth is, what you've advised us to do to build the WOT is what I naturally on my own started doing about a year and a half ago when I joined this site. I've spent more time leaving comments, and ratings and been very polite, and gotten very nice ratings and comments on what I've reviewed. Still not a single member trusts me. I think it is human nature not to be the first. Just as it is hard for people to go against the fray and mark something "helpful" when everyone said it was "very helpful". Generally speaking most people here seem to follow their own opinions and voice them quite easily.
but I still think that it's the same at a party; nobody really wants to be the first one on the dancefloor.

Very helpful info for newbie (Reply to this comment)

Hi, I really enjoyed this review. I am fairly new and I have gotten decent ratings on my reviews but I would really like to see them improve. Your tip about the word count I found to be really helpful.

I still don't totally get the WOT (Reply to this comment)
by cathyb53
....and I've been at this for well over a year now. But I can grasp that it's important to build my WOT, and important to get people to read my reviews. OK, I'll add you to mine, right now, Mr. Gasjocket!

This seems like a logical method, although I feel that anyone who simply writes honest and decent reviews will probably end up with a decent sized web anyway =)

You make some good points... (Reply to this comment)
by Programmer2k
Posting comments appears to be a good way to get publicity here on Epinions. It's hard to get hits just writing reviews. You need to show your face now and then...
I hate to tell people to 'write x number of words', but you do make a good point. It's hard to write a thorough review in 100 words. It's not impossible, but if you only have 1 paragraph, you might look it over to see if you left something out.

I don't know, (Reply to this comment)
by remnjava
I think you've VHed nearly every opinion you're rated of mine, I get 95% VH,4%H and only two SH, yet my WOT sucks. I rate folks who have never heard of me, leave comments, rate those who have rated me. Somehow I'm failing miserably.
Any help from ANYONE would be appreciated.
Thanks anyway,
Carol

Very good epinion (Reply to this comment)
by Saxguy
When I trust I take into account the factors you cite, but I also look at people who read me with some regularity and I will also notice the quality of their WOT (number and people both trusting and trusted) and the overall fairness of their ratings.
I generally wait to trust people who trust a lot more than they are trusted, to see about their writing.
I'm not entirely sure that the number of words should be a goal; it's possible to write a lot without saying a lot.
Now, I'd like to see YOU write a little more often!

You rate often (Reply to this comment)
by 4-1-1
Which is helpful, I suppose. In all your reading, don't you find others that you trust?
Like many users of this site, I am suspicious of those who trust only a handful of people but are, in turn, trusted by HUNDREDS. Oftentimes, the people who are trusted are family members or people who aren't even active.
Another way to build one's WOT is to read and rate other reviews and INVEST trust in other writers who publish quality material.
It is more helpful to have faithful readers than an inactive WOT.
Just my observation....

good review (Reply to this comment)
by zhouse
except that it seems that you've forgotten one aspect:
To also give your trust to other members.
Only 7 members are worthy? I think there are more than that out there.
I try to keep my list updated with live members, but I know that giving my trust also helped my meager list grow from 30 to 70.

Hmmmm (Reply to this comment)
by linda1527
You said something to the affect of constantly reading and rating for about 15-20 minutes a day?. Hmmmmm. Just how many reviews can you read in 15-20 minutes a day, I would think maybe five or six tops. When I first joined epinions I spent more like 8 to 10 hours (that's right-- hours) a day reading and rating reviews. I was very addicted to this site, to the point of neglecting other aspects of my life, which of course was way off balance. I'm glad I stopped worrying about how many members on my WOT or me on their's. Would much rather put that time to good use instead of counting pennies from a site that didn't always appreciate the good quality writers they had!

I was not saying that reviews are better when they are under 500 words, I was saying that length should not be a factor when rating. Even if a person can crank out 500 words about a baby toy, is that really needed? Do you really need to know (for example) how well the stock of the toy company has done for the past 12 years? I agree with you that any good writer can write a lot, but I also believe that quantity is not what makes an article well-written.

I understand what you mean about my trust ratio, I do not think I am better then everyone else, it just that I am very picky with who I trust. If I am scanning over your profile there are about a million different things that I look for before I trust you. Now to answer your second question: You gave me a link to a review that you said was a "quality not quantity" review. I pasted the review into Microsoft Word and did a word count on it. It turns out that review was 612 words. In my review I said it should be more then 500 words if you really know what you are talking about, so I dont really see your point with saying that your review is a "quality not quantity" review. Here is the main point that I want to stress: if you really know what you are talking about in your review, you should have no trouble writing more then 500 words.

Good stuff (Reply to this comment)
by pearman
Nice article, but I have to say I disagree on two points.
You say, "if I am browsing around the epinions website and I come across a very respected writer and see that he only trusts 9 members I would want to see who those people are!". I disagree with this. I know this is your method, you are trusted by 150 or so if I am not mistaken, and you only trust 7. I don't mean to be rude or anything, but this really turned me off to trusting you. It made me feel as if you think you are better than everyone else, and therefore you need to keep your trust to trusted ratio down.
Secondly, I don't agree with you about the length thing. Check out my article at http://heaven.epinions.com/content_1236246660 about the subject. I believe that quality is what counts in a review, not quantity.
However, I did like your article(s). Keep up the good work with the writing!

I try to... (Reply to this comment)

...do as you suggest. Read, rate, review, write. Sadly, I don't have the time or the facilities to write as much as I'd like (see some of my essays for the reasons why *grin*), and I think I'm also hobbled by the time differences.
Still, thanks anyway - you write common sense (but I think a lot of it has been said before).
Cheers,

good review... (Reply to this comment)
by fallyn96
you made some great points. but you forgot something- trusting people who write quality reviews will also get you trusted :o). i'm selective about who i trust, but i've found that in the days following me trusting someone, that someone trusts me (not necessarily the same person- but hey, whatever works).
as for writing quality reviews- i disagree with the length somewhat. i've seen some nice, high quality reviews that really aren't that long (although i personally can't seem to do it, lol). it really depends on your skills as a writer, and how well you get your point across- which you have done with this review.
see? i can't even leave a short comment ;o).

I am Verbosity Incarnate (Reply to this comment)
by Sordid-1
Man, I could easily fire off 700 words about the pleasing texture of potato salad and still not cover everthing I wanted to say. My problem usually centers around excess, I always end up snipping parts of my review into oblivion.
This is rock solid advice; write well and float your name - especially the "write well" part. Newbies should groove on it.
