| sgentile's Full Review: Pirates Adventures On The Sea Gypsy |
Pirate Adventures on the Sea Gypsy is one of our two favorite things weve done at the Cape with our kids (the other is the childrens museum in Mashpee; http://www.epinions.com/content_150012857988 ). Be sure to make reservations early, especially on days where the weather is forecast to be overcast. Reservations are required.
The Specifics:
Pirate Adventures on the Sea Gypsy has daily excursions from Hyannis and Orleans. 9am, 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm, 3pm, & 4:30pm. www.pirateadventures.com Hyannis 508-430-0202 Ocean St. Dock, slip #4.
This is a real boat trip so be prepared with sunscreen and a light jacket. Tickets are $17, but then you will also want to purchase the cute pirate hats that all of the kids will be wearing. I believe these kerchief things were $6 each. They also sell tee shirts.
This adventure is best suited for children aged 3 to about 12. There were two-year-olds that seemed to be having fun, and older kids and adults are still amused, especially if a younger sibling is participating. It's entertaining and unusual, and a nice boat ride. Parents are required to sail ship with their little pirates.
The Adventure:
While signing in, the crew will paint pirate themed tattoos and facial hair on your child if they allow them to. Theyll have to sign their names to a pirate flag and receive a necklace, and get a sailor sash to tie around their waists (these must be returned). The crew were a bunch of friendly high school or college aged girls when we went; very nice and great with children.
As the Sea Gypsy arrives, its passengers are all down on the deck pretending to be dead, sick or injured in battle. The crews on board shout back and forth with the crewmembers on deck waiting to assist in tying the ship back onto the dock. Suddenly the little crew jumps up and gleefully announces that they were just kidding!
The captain, fully dressed in pirate attire, comes out to greet his new crew. He rallies the kids together and makes them take the pirate oath, and then leads them to board the pirate ship. The 1st mate takes over first telling them a story, teaching them certain pirate lingo, and leads them through a few exercises. She then brings out the treasure map and lays it out on the deck where they all gather around it. The kids must look out for clues (a lighthouse, an island, etc) that will lead them to the buried treasure. In the middle of the adventure a rival pirate is spotted and the child crew are ordered to man and fire the water cannons at the pirate. This is truly a hysterically frantic part of the adventure, one that the children take quite seriously and enjoy immensely. When the treasure is found and pulled up from the sea the kids are invited to share the bootie each is allowed one handful of treasure: rings, trinkets, magnifying glasses and other novelty items; a most exciting even for the kids.
Later on someone spots a skull floating around in the water. This skull turns out to be a bottle of lemonade. Before the lemonade can be shared a volunteer must first sample it to see if it is poisoned.
This is a WONDERFUL family adventure! I give this attraction a top rating. My family will be returning every year until my children outgrow it. It is fun for everyone in your family.
