Can there possibly be a topic more boring than plastic wrap? Over my four year stink at Epinions Ive really dug deep into the bowels of the site to find the most off-the-beaten-path type products but this one has to win some kind of award. No matter what you call it plastic wrap, saran wrap, cling wrap its all the same; thin plastic wrap designed to keep thing preserved. More often than not this is something thats used in the kitchen but have you ever known me to not try to get the most out of a product? I gave up on buying the high priced brand name plastic wrap after spending an obscene amount of money on a 4,000 foot roll yes, four thousand feet of plastic wrap. What made me scale down to the 200 foot size? Lets put it this way
I am not a normal person that I freely admit but I took no pleasure whatsoever in getting tangled up in about a hundred feet of this stuff when I was trying to unstuck one of the edges and you all know what happens when one little piece on the end sticks to the roll. Much like the similar ongoing battle with toilet paper, if you dont nip it in the bud early it spirals out of control until you go through half the roll trying to even things out.
Rite Aid Clear Plastic Wrap
OK, lets get this out of the way right now its plastic wrap. It isnt something that is going to change your life, revolutionize the way you see things or do anything outside of form a protective seal for food and other household items. So, I ask thee, why bother to spend almost twice as much on a name brand item when you can pick up the Rite Aid version and get the same end result. The size of the roll is pretty much standard 66 yards in length and 12 inches high. Unless you need a larger width to work with or are covering large surfaces, this is a great pick for sealing up foods, wrapping sandwiches, covering items for the microwave to keep splashes to a minimum and as a suitable replacement for lost storage lids. For a little added protection I like to apply a layer over the edges of food storage containers to keep spilling or leakage to a minimum it doesnt always work but even if it helps half the time, it does cut down on clean up time.
For those who have never used a plastic wrap its really pretty simple. Remove the edge of the wrap, pull of the amount you need and rip it off using the metal edger on the side of the box. You might need to play around with this aspect of it a little since the wrap does tend to stick to itself a lot when pulling it off the roll, even so, it isnt impossible to peel apart but dont get all flustered and start pulling at it youll only end up stretching it and having to start all over. This works best when attached to things that have a slight lip to them glass bowls are great because you can pull the wrap tightly across it to create one hell of a seal. Even when used on plastic bowls or directly on food, if you pull it tightly across it and press down on the sides you can form a nice bond.
Alternative Uses
Yes, the section you have been waiting for! I am prone to bug bites there could be a hundred people at a party and every bug within a two mile radius seems so pick me out of the crowd and feast on me. Band-Aids are pretty much useless since they cant flex and move like plastic wrap. Depending on the bite I use this wrap alone to cover a mud pack or medication or to keep a large piece of gauze in place. I dont have to worry about getting adhesive stuck to me no it losing its sticking power since I can unwrap and rewrap it as many times as I like. Maybe its just me but the Rite Aid brand of plastic wrap really sticks to itself a lot better than other brands. This is great for holding packs in place for kids too if they pick at it or remove it, you can slap it back into place in a few seconds.
When Southern California isnt sweltering hot I love to bake and with that comes mailing out things to my friends and relatives overseas. I started using the Rite Aid Plastic Wrap when I ran out of my old wrap and all the local stores were closed. I made my nephew some chocolate covered pretzels and knew that by time they got to him theyd be reduced to smashed bits if I didnt pack them properly. I cut out cardboard, lined them with parchment paper and put the pretzels on them. After that I took large pieces of the wrap and sealed them to the cardboard about eight on each piece. After that all I had to do was slide them into a box and fill the sides with packing peanuts and it was good to go. When it arrived a week later he called me and I asked him how many were broken shockingly enough only four of them were damaged. Four out of about fifty .. not bad at all.
Things To Know
Well, if I have to tell you that this isnt a toy chances are you shouldnt be using anything even remotely close to a plastic wrap. Smaller kids should never be allowed to use this under any circumstances because even a small piece could present a real chocking or suffocation hazard. The same can be said for pets. When Annabelle paints I cover up the paint pots and her current creation with a few pieces of this plastic wrap when she wants to take a break. That all changed when she peeled off a piece and put it on the side of the table sounds harmless huh? Not less than a minute later one of the dogs got a hold of it and swallowed part of it. Thankfully he started chewing on it and part of it was caught in his teeth. Ever see a woman wrestling with a dog to get a piece of wadded up plastic wrap out of its mouth / throat? Not fun, no, not in the least.
The Bottom Line
Ive had nothing but great results with this plastic wrap and it works just as well as the ones that cost almost twice as much. If you arent a product snob, this sis definitely a product to check out on your next trip to Rite Aid. Be sure to look for the awesome sales they have on this about four times a year I plan on heavily stocking up on this when the next sale starts because I have some pretty freaky ideas for using this during Halloween! Its pretty easy to work with, seals off nicely on bowls and dishes and is a must have for wrapping up larger items that dont fit into bowls especially watermelon! For less than two bucks you are getting a great product that does the same thing as the name brands
for a lot less.
As always, thanks for the read!
