Star Wars, Naturally!

May 16 '01

The Bottom Line Star Wars is the best series because it has brought together so many wonderful authors to create a well meshed universe.

The Best Science Fiction Series

The Best Science Fiction Series would have to be the Star Wars collection of novels. In 1977, George Lucas brought the world – STAR WARS. What started out as just three novels – “Star Wars”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, and “The Return of the Jedi”, and a novelette – “Splinter of the Minds Eye”, has grown to 139+ novels for both children and adults all based on the Star Wars Universe, usually done in groups of three or more, but all connected to each other. The writers have done a wonderful job of NOT contradicting each other, and putting references to other authors books in their own. With the exception of Star Trek, no other Science Fiction work has brought so many people together.

Some of the series that I've seen mentioned for this topic, were more fantasy than Science Fiction in my opinion. In that realm, I have an entire list of favorites, and a BEST. But then, this is Science Fiction, not fantasy we're discussing.

Some of the best series in the Star Wars Universe are the Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin, The Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley, The X-Wing Series by Michael A. Stackpole and continued by Aaron Allston, The Jedi Academy Trilogy by Kevin J. Anderson, The Blackfleet Crisis, Trilogy by Michael P. Kube-McDowell, The Corellian Trilogy by Roger McBride Allen, The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn, and the Young Jedi series by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta.

Barbara Hambly, Vonda M. McIntyre, Steve Perry, have also contributed to the Star Wars Universe. For a simple story about a boy, a girl and a universe to draw the caliber of writers that are listed here is phenomenal.

My favorite is the Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin. It is the story of how Han Solo got to be the man we grow to love in the movies. We find out just how he understands Chewbacca, how he meets Chewbacca, the first loves of his life, a little bit about his parentage (very little), how he met Lando Calrissian, and about his connection to Jabba the Hutt. OH YEAH, we learn how he got the Millenium Falcon.

Ever wonder just what happens after “The Return of the Jedi” to Leia and Han? There are novels that cover the early married years, and Leia’s pregnancies. In the novels, she ends up with three children a set of twins, 1 boy, 1 girl, and a younger boy. Want to read about the kids? Check out the Young Jedi novels. They feature Jacen, and Jaina Solo at their Uncle Luke’s Jedi Academy, with their younger brother Anakin, peaking his head in from time to time.

How do you know which book to read first????? Well, pick a character that you like and go from there. There are a number of web sites that have the lists of novels. If you like, you could read them in chronological order.
http://www.theforce.net/books/reviews/novels_chrono.shtml
lists the adult fiction books in chronological order. The children's novels are on another page of their website.

You could also do a search on Barnes and Noble. Com, or Amazon.com for “Star Wars” and purchase books online.
