This car is so cool! I had a 1988 Subaru XT that just wouldn't die...but I was ready for something more substantial.
By the way, this seems to be the Official Car of Portland!! They're everywhere.
I almost bought a VW Passat Wagon, but the dealer was giving me a bunch of b.s., not budging on price, wanting a co-signer, etc. I'm 25, and yes it was my 1st new car, but I don't need a co-signer!
So I ended up with my awesome Forester X, 5 speed. I think I made an excellent choice! The VW was very plush, and kind of flashy, and I just didn't feel that it was something I would want to take up to the mountain or go on a dirt road in. The Forester is not quite as smooth, but it is very agile, and takes potholes like a pro.
My vehicle has the plastic-y body molding, which is not as flashy as the matching body, but it is VERY durable and easy to clean. Also, at first I felt that the boxiness of the Forester was a little frumpy/ugly, but now I really like it. The rear seats fold down, and this car has an amazing amount of cargo space. Th generous ceiling height is great, especially if you are tall.
The Forester has lots of hidden storage compartments, including a giant one in the center dash.
My only complaint has more to do with the dealer than with the car itself. I had paid approx. $1300 for a moonroof installation when I bought the car. The more expensive XS model has a giant moonroof that extends to the rear seats, and I thought that was what was promised. Instead, I got a standard size, non-dealer installed moonroof.
I am happy with it now, but be forewarned: If you want the big moonroof, it has to be factory installed. This car is built like a tank, and it is impossible to install the big moonroof . Also, rumor has it that the factory installed moonroofs have had serious leaking problems.
