Magazine subscriptions are something that I cant seem to get enough of. An avid reader of non- fiction books and newspapers, I also have a weakness for certain magazines, with travel, politics, and hobbies ranking among the subjects covered by the magazines I enjoy most.
Anyone can contact a magazine company directly and start up a subscription, and its easy to find a mail- in card to subscribe to your favorite read via mail. But with the internet, there are all sorts of other ways to find magazines and many of them are very competitive. One such site is magazinevalues.com, a web site that can help you save money on your favorite periodical.
What Does This Service Offer?:
Magazinevalues.com offers the following items for sale:
Magazines- The obvious one. Magazinevalues.com got its name because of the great deals offered on new magazines and renewals.
Books- Thousands of books are offered for sale here, with many of them at bargain- basement prices.
Music- Purchase your favorite CD here, including popular and hard to find issues.
Games- Video games, entertainment DVDs, educational and training CDs, and others are available here.
Gifts- Chocolates, flowers, gift baskets, and presents for specific occasions can be purchased in this section.
Payment Methods/Shipping Charges:
To start making purchases, you must first setup an account. This involves the usual steps: entering your name and address, e-mail, phone, password, etc. Once this is established, you can start to shop.
Payment can be made either by Visa, Master Card, PayPal, or by sending a check in the mail. This is true not only of the magazines section, but of the others as well.
Shipping charges can add a few dollars to your purchase. On books, for example, you can expect your order to go up by $3.50 plus 99 cents per book ordered. Similar charges are added to other orders, with the exception of magazines.
Customer Service:
Magazinevalues.com is located in Winter Haven, Florida. You can contact either by e-mail (through the appropriate link in the web site) or by phone. The phone# to contact is 863-326-1125. However, they do not accept orders by phone (at least not now). You can order only through the internet.
Final Thoughts:
Magazinevalues.com has undergone some serious revamping in the last year or so. As I recall, when I first used this web service a few years ago, it was exclusively a place to purchase magazines. Now, it has been acquired by shoppervalues.com and has expanded its offerings into other areas. I can appreciate the need for a business to grow and expand. But in many ways, the new site is not an improvement over the old.
The first thing I noticed right away is that some of the new features have not been fully developed. When you select a link to buy music, games, gifts, or books, the screen changes to what looks like a completely new home page of a separate web service. The basic graphics are the same, but each one of these areas seems like its own store, which (I think) is the way the new owners intended things. If, for instance, you click on home in any one of the sections, you end up on the home page of that particular section- not the home page of magazinevalues.com. And what you get in each of the links is somewhat limited. In the books area, there are fewer than 10,000 books available for sale. In the case of the games section, there is nothing available yet at all. They are still working on this section of the site.
Product information is not very good. Its ok in the magazine section, but that is, in part, because there isnt a whole lot to say about a magazine other than describing what it contains, the price, and the number of issues. Other areas are not so good. In music CDs, for example, the site tells you very little about what you are considering buying. They do not provide a way to listen to the music, and they do not even list the tracks. Also, if a CD has been re- released, all you will see is the re- release date. There is no mention of when the music was originally released.
Magazinevalues.com still has at least one positive quality that keeps me coming back: the magazine bargains. When you logon, you will notice right away that there is a section to click with nearly one- hundred magazine subscriptions offered at only $4.97- often half or one- third the price of a regular subscription. At a price that low, it can often be fun to shop magazinevalues.com, load up your cart, and enjoy some good reads. For a price of, say, only $19.88, you can enjoy four magazine subscriptions.
There are some nice search options in certain areas, like in books, where you can search not only by the usual methods (author, subject, bestsellers, etc.), but also by price. This is nice for those times when you want to look for a book but have limited funds available for use. All you do is click on the desired price and surf through the options.
One annoying thing about Magazinevalues.com is that you must wait many weeks- often four or more- to get your first magazine issue. It takes longer than with other magazine purchase sites or with direct purchase of magazines from the magazine company. I can overlook this, in most cases, because the prices are low. But this is something you need to consider if you need your magazines more quickly.
Magazinevalues.com has made changes; thats for certain. I dont necessarily like the appearance of the new site and I dont like the features and limited selection of the other product offerings. But as far as the magazines go, I still have to give this service a recommendation. It might be ugly and the lag time between placing an order and receiving it might be long, but the prices are still among the lowest in the business. And for most people, the bottom line is price. As long as these bargain prices remain in effect, I will continue to shop at this site. You cant beat prices like $4.97 for an annual magazine subscription.
Logon and have fun shopping!
