Pacific Bell DSL - Be Aware

The Bottom Line I would recommend never to choose Pac Bell or any company that goes through Pac Bell. If you do choose one, make sure they're not affiliated with Pac Bell.

I called Pac Bell to install a second line in my house so I could hop on the net. When the technician came to install the 2nd line, he was pushing DSL like it was the cure for AIDS. He said they were running a promotion where I would get the DSL modem and installation for free if I signed a 1 year contract for $39.99 a month. He also said that I could get speeds almost as fast as a T1 line. I thought it seemed like a good deal at the time. Oh how I was wrong.

It was April of 2000. The technician said the promotion only ran till the end of April 2000. So I decided to sign up. This was the first of my mistakes. When I called to sign up, they said they would have to wait until they added ports to their switches to connect me. I thought Ok, no big deal. I waited and waited. I would call them every month and ask when they would install the modem. They always said a couple of weeks but it never happened. Finally, I got one of their people to come and install the modem in August of 2000 after many empty promises. After the service was setup and everything installed, I was surfing the net at incredible speeds. I thought this was great. Then the bubble burst. My connection was getting dropped all the time. I was having trouble reconnecting. When I did get connected, it was even slower than a 56k modem. This all started happening around late September and early October.

At this point, I was very upset. I called and asked them what's the problem with the DSL service. They said they'll send someone out to check on it. The technician who ran some tests said there was nothing wrong with it. I showed him how slow it was and how many times it dropped connections, but he stuck with his response of "the tests show nothing wrong with it." I was livid!!! I called to complain to Pac Bell about it many other times. Each time they would send someone out and check my service. Every time the result would be the same. There's nothing wrong with it or there's nothing they can do. This went on for many months.

It was about January 2001 when I checked in forums and chat rooms and saw that many people had the same problems with Pac Bell DSL. Many people recommended different things like buying a router and changing your dns to another provider or complaining to government agencies. So I submitted a complaint to the FCC. Boy, did this make Pac Bell get on their derrière. After that complaint, they would send out an engineer instead of a technician to look at the problem. The engineer came out and agreed that I had bad service. He said he couldn't fix anything because it was a Saturday. After some phone calls, he had some people digging up my street to look for problems. Eventually, they found a phone tap on the line. They have since removed the tap and it's working ok so far. Not nearly as fast as when it was first installed. I've learned my lesson to never trust Pac Bell again. They make empty promises and their customer service stinks worse than a skunk in a box. When August 2001 rolls around, I can guarantee you that I will cancel Pac Bell DSL with the blink of an eye.

The worse part of all of this is, other companies that say they have DSL are really using Pac Bell as their DSL provider.
