| jps246's Full Review: QVegas |
If youre thinking of visiting Las Vegas and looking for a good introduction to lesbian and gay life in the city, you should consider picking up a copy of Q Vegas, a monthly magazine that has been Las Vegas gay and lesbian voice for 26 years.
Q Vegas covers a lot of ground for a lot of different readers, from residents of Las Vegas to first time visitors. Youll find information on area events, news for the gay and lesbian community, information for visitors, club listings and more. Not only that, Q Vegas is an excellent gay and lesbian newsmagazine in of itself, even if youre not in Las Vegas (though some of the content wont mean much to you then).
Magazine Basics
Q Vegas is published 12 times a year and issues are available free throughout the greater Las Vegas area. If you keep your eyes open as your going around Vegas, you should be able to snag yourself a copy. If youre interested in not having to search out issues and want a subscription for yourself, it is available direct from the publisher for $25 a year.
Issues are around a hundred pages and each issue is broken down into two main sections, the Features and the Departments. Advertising is scattered throughout the magazine and probably runs about 60/40, with there being about 60% of the magazine dedicated to editorial content and 40% for advertising.
Features
Youll find the major stories of each issue of Q Vegas in the Features section. This is also where youll find the cover stories. Topics are wide ranging with stories going from a look at Gay Youth today to questions and answers about Metropolitan Community Church. The articles generally run for a couple of pages, with four or five pages being the maximum and if that is the case, the articles are generally started up front, but are then finished towards the back of the magazine.
Departments
Heres where youll find the rest of what makes up Q Vegas. Not only are there the typical magazine sections like a Letter from the Editor and reader mail, but theres a multitude of different sections that serve both general readers and readers looking for information on Las Vegas gay life in particular.
These include on the Q-T, a collection of news bites and short stories highlighting books, restaurants, movies and more that are of interest to the gay and lesbian community. On the Q-T, also includes quick reviews of music and also includes Desert Diva, where you can get the latest dirt on whats happening in Vegas.
Beyond that, there are several more sections all devoted to different aspects of gay and lesbian life in Vegas and beyond. These include: Q Media, which looks the latest happenings in the media (tv and movies) world; Q News, a monthly look at news in the Las Vegas region and the rest of the state and country; Q People, which profiles an important person in the region; Q Home looks at style and design issues for the home; Q Girl looks at the lesbian community; On Q is a photo essay from events and happenings in the previous month; As youd expect, Q Fashion takes a monthly look at various fashions with both male and female models; The Club Guide gives a detailed look at gay and lesbian clubs in Las Vegas and any special events they are having; The Service Maps provides a map showing various gay and lesbian services (bars, clubs, shopping and eating to name a few); Nightlife Vision collects photos from nightlife around the city; Calendar gives a breakdown on gay and lesbian events and activities throughout the upcoming month; Q Market is a collection of classified advertising for various services and businesses in the region; Q Vibrations is a monthly horoscope; and finally Quid Pro Quo is a monthly column by different writers about a topic that is important to them.
Hows it read?
I always pick up a copy of Q Vegas when Im visiting the city. It gives me a good idea of whats happening while Im there and is by itself an interesting read. I find it fascinating to find out what is happening to the gay and lesbian community in the rest of the country. The writing and editing in the magazine are well done, and the information provided (such as on clubs and activities) has been, from what I can tell, all top-notch and truthful.
For a free magazine, Q Vegas is a quality publication. Yeah, there might be a lot of advertisements, but what do you expect when its free? However, considering it has been the gay and lesbian voice in Vegas for 26 years, Q Vegas has found its groove and is an excellent read for both inhabitants and visitors of Las Vegas.
Website
Q Vegas offers a website at www.Qvegas.com where you can order back issues, check out the latest issue online (they provide nearly all the printed content for each issue on the web), purchase a subscription, or find out more information and links for gay and lesbian Las Vegas. Theres also information on where Q Vegas is distributed, so you can have an easier time finding it on the street.
Final Thoughts
A well put together magazine that balances the needs of the residents of Las Vegas and its many visitors, Q Vegas is a great magazine that no gay or lesbian should be without when theyre in the city. Not only will you find out about the newest clubs, the latest news and the hippest events in Las Vegas, youll get a quality gay and lesbian magazine that does provide plenty of content for people looking for something more than just Las Vegas life.
