Opinion Summary
325i Lives Up To Its Lofty Reputation--A Delightful And Desirable Sports Sedan
by drive571 | Aug 18 '04
Pros: Creamy inline six, magic chassis, perfectly-matched control feel. Plus, it comes in a wagon.
Cons: Dated interior styling and imperfect ergonomics betray the 325i's aging design.

I too was thinking, "man, all horsepower numbers aren't created equal!"

Thanks for the thorough write-up. Driving this car is a dream. You can turn off the DSC manually if you choose, so this shouldn't have been an issue for you even on the race track.

Regarding the interior, I disagree regarding the climate control - it all makes perfect and easy sense to me. My only complaint is with the stereo controls: why on earth won't the CD player display the track timing? You can get track numbers, but not the timer. This is ridiculous. Another peeve, although not as major, is that there is no indication of the volume levels. If a CD starts out very quiet, it's nice to set th elevel at a known quantity, rather than wait for the loud passage and adjust it on the fly.

a nice write-up on your 325i driving experience. i'm not in total agreement about the interior of the car, but that's purely subjective. i used to be a big Honda/Japanese ergonomics fan and would have agreed with you that the BMW dashboard looked dated, but i think it's a matter of taste and acclimation. after driving the car a few times i really grew to like the interior, and i think the quality is actually quite nice. after all the raves i read about the quality of the Acura TSX and TL materials, i was actually pretty underwhelmed when i checked them out - they actually feel more plasticky and gadgety to me than the BMW. i do agree that the climate control is hard to operate though.

one minor correction that came to mind - you mention the lack of a folding rear seat. ("Making matters worse is the fact that there's no folding rear seat, even as an option.") that is not true - you can get folding rear seats as an option by itself, or as part of the cold weather package. i do agree that the lack of cargo area is a significant weakness though... as a 325i owner i've cursed at that tiny trunk a few times myself.

cheers,
dorkus
