Garden Speakers and Rock Speakers
May 18 '01
The Bottom Line Choose Garden and Rock speakers by looking for a company with a large selection and easy return policy as to sample them first.
"Garden" and "Rock" speakers are the newest twist on the outdoor speaker market. There are a number of things to consider about this new style.
1. Where do you get them? That's the problem with new things. Some pool/spa stores are carrying these but they aren't stereo people so they may not sound good at those places. Stereo stores can "order" them for you, but they usually won't have them on hand for your listening tests. Online companies are often a good source to find a large selection and usually their return policies are favorable so that you could test them out in your own environment. But check first!
2. How do they sound? Generally they don't require as much power to drive because they'll be closer to where you listen to them as opposed to speakers that mount under the eves of your house 50 ft. away. So bottom line is the quality will be better because they'll be played a lower level and thus less prone to distortion.
3. How do they hold up in the weather? Great! Most are completely sealed and they are made of entirely synthetic materials made for the extremes.
4. How do they hook up to my stereo? You'll want to add a volume control in line with your stereo so you can turn them down outside or near your door to the outside. In most cases you'll add the outdoor speaker to your "B" set of speaker outlets on your stereo. In some cases you'll want more than one pair of speakers, in that case you'll need a speaker selector to sort of "trick" your amplifier/receiver into thinking it's only running a single pair of speakers, when you actually can be running 4, 6, 8, or more pairs comfortably.
