Pros:strong performers, good script
Cons:Parking!! Not easy!
The Bottom Line: Any fan of theater, excellent writing, and superb acting, all wrapped up in an hour and 15 minutes (no intermission) shouldn't miss Cobb
I had no idea what to expect when I went to see Cobb. It looked interesting, and my husband wanted to see it, so we went. I knew nothing about Ty Cobb, except that he was an old time, famous (He had to very famous, or I would never have recognized the name!) baseball player. I had a lot to learn.
The entire play is performed with various stages of Cobb's life appearing in flashback, with three actors portraying the man. There was Mr. Cobb, the later years, Peach, the young ball player, and Ty, the businessman. There was also Oscar Charleston, who seems to be haunting him throughout his life, and flashbacks. He fails to recognize him until late in the play, when his identity is revealed to us as well.
Through the flashback we see the side of Cobb the hero worshipers don't want to see. His bigotry, antisemitism, and violent streak are brought out clearly. His cruel hard personality is brought out into the light of day for all to see, and for the elder Cobb to look at in self examination. Things are revealed about his past that he sees differently from everybody else. Events from his past are obviously harsh, but he rationalizes every event. There was a good reason for everything he did. "It wasn't my fault; he made me hit him!!"
Whether you are a baseball fan or not, be prepared for a performance sparkling with its energy. The actors are all superb, and it is excellent theater. It is well written, well acted and worth seeing!
